Cov Cath entering the fray will shake things up of course, coming off an indoor 2A State championship.

The distance events will see some major revisions in the coming weeks. The Lafayette meet will feature some of the best runners in the state.

Look for Will Sheets (Cov Cath), Lincoln Herald (Grant Co) and possibly Paul Van Laningham (Cooper) as part of a stacked Bluegrass contingent at the Arcadia (CA) Invitational in the 3200m. There will be an assault on Bobby Curtis' (St. Xavier) 22 year old all-time KY best of 8:48.39. Sheets, this year's Gatorade Cross Country Runner of the Year, is coming off a blistering 14:16.29 KY indoor 5K record at the Nike Indoor Nationals in New York last month.

Is the distance runner from Thomas Nelson participating in the Arcadia?

I've not seen an official entry list. Sugi won his division (one of four) last year and history has shown those who do well get invited for an encore. Add to that, he's coming off a 4th in in the mile run at the New Balance Indoor Nationals and is a top recruit in the '25 class, and I'd say he's a lock.

The marks in this screenshot by Curtis, Thomson, Sugi, and Sheets, were all set at Arcadia. The Bluegrass in in the midst of a "Golden Age" in distance running.

That list is chock full of past, present, and future D1 talent.

An edit to a previous post ~ Cov Cath's "entry" at the Lafayette meet this weekend is not confirmed, though listed on their MileSplit team page. Same happened last year and they began the season at the Oak Ridge (TN) Legends Invite instead. ?

? Some very good meets are on tap for the weekend. These are the first in-season rankings for all three "NKY" classes.

Way early takes ~

Really nice race in 3A shaping up between Dixie and Cooper. Ryle has a great stable of sprinters but lost a lot to graduation.

Lloyd has a nice core group of sprinters; if they can round into shape in the field events they could be the best Juggernauts team in a generation.

Franklin County is surprising me so far. Have thought they've had some untapped talent for a while now.

New Cath is off to a great start. It's been a while since the Breds won a Region title. Is this their year?

Bellevue off to a good start takes me back. Lots of good memories and friendships made on the cinders of old Civic Stadium.

I think it's going to be a few more weeks before we see what defending State 1A champ Beechwood has under the hood. They're about three weeks out from hitting the heart of their schedule.

Cov Cath hits the 2A R4 in-season rankings at No. 3, thanks to their JV performances Wednesday.

? A late congrats to Grant County senior Lincoln Herald for his indoor 5,000m win at the New Balance Nationals in Boston last month. Nice to see the Cincinnati commit on top of the podium!

Yes. Per Arcadia, three runners are repping the Bluegrass in California this year in three different 3200m divisions:

• Kobey Yates (Marshall Co, 3A, JR) in one of last night's Open races, running a KY '25 all-class #5.

• Paul Van Laningham (Cooper, 3A, JR) tonight in the Seeded division. The '24 3A XC champ is coming off a KY #1 Mile at the Tyson & Trinity Gay meet, defeating Sheets (Cov Cath SR, KY #2) and Herald (Grant Co SR, KY #3). The Seeded ("rising star") race was won by Sugi last year.

• Riku Sugi (Thomas Nelson, 2A, SR) is in tonight's Invitational race. How fast will this race be? There are four HS sub 4 minute milers, and the rest of the field is full of some of the country's best 3200m and 5000m runners. Would like to see one of Kentucky's most decorated runners come home having broken Curtis' record.

Link to Arcadia's site, which includes video webcast and live results. Scheduled tonight, EDT: Seeded at 8:20, Invitational at 8:34.

? Random notes ~

Keep the good folks of Ludlow in your thoughts as the flood waters recede. Looking forward to the return of the Ludlow Track Invitational next year.

The big Lloyd Memorial meet was rescheduled, then cancelled. Lost opportunities for many teams. Great place to watch a meet under the lights; hope it comes together in the future.

Dixie Heights is in the hunt for their first Region title since 2011.

Bourbon Co may have found the piece they need retake the 2A R4 crown and a run to state in Frosh sprinter Da'Zaian Champagne.

This year's New Cath squad may be their best in nearly 50 years, building some momentum for when the Breds finally gets a home track built on The Hill.

Paul Van Laningham of Cooper is putting together one of the best junior year campaigns in NKY distance running history. Looked perfectly at home among some of the country's best at the Arcadia (CA) Invitational last night.

(*) Corrections to the previous post: Kentucky 1A team scoring for Brossart and New Cath; Area 5 team scoring for Cov Cath; Van Laningham's 1600m time (c = time converted from mile run).
