Week 12 and the regular season is in the books! I would break the region into three tiers. Your first tier is Bell County, Harlan County, and South Laurel. You could probably rank these teams 1A, 1B, and 1C. Within the last couple weeks, Harlan County has beat South Laurel, South Laurel has beat Bell County, and Bell County has beat Harlan County. It’s been an interesting finish to the season. Harlan County and Bell County will be opposite each other in the region though because they’re in the same district. Within tier 2 lies Corbin, North Laurel, Clay County, and Knox Central. All probably teams that are good enough to win one, and maybe even two games in the region, but I’m not sure if they reel off three in a row. Pineville is on the outside of tier 2, with a dangerous big three but not sure if they can guard well enough to upset anyone. Then the rest is your rest of the region teams. I’ll go into a district preview then the rankings!

49th:
The opening night game is tonight between Red Bird and OBI. I’ll take OBI in a blowout. OBI’s reward for winning is a game with North Laurel. I think North Laurel will blow out OBI in this one. The opposite side has Clay County and Jackson County playing. I think this one will also be a blowout by Clay County. The showdown between Clay County and North Laurel should be a great game between the two if that ends up what happens.

50th:
South Laurel and Williamsburg will be the first game to be played. This game will be a blow out. South Laurel should roll. Corbin and Whitley County should be a pretty solid game. They split the regular season series with each team winning on the road. It’s hard for me to imagine Corbin not winning this game, but I don’t think they’re a write in yet. A Corbin and South Laurel final should be a great game.

51st:
Knox and Lynn Camp are the opening game. Knox should roll in this as they rolled in both games in the regular season. Pineville and Barbourville are game two. I would think Pineville would win, but I think Barbourville is playing good basketball right now. I could see this game being closer than what people would think. I like Knox Central to beat either team in the district final.

52nd:
Bell County and Harlan County should both roll in their opening games. Bell plays Middlesboro and HC plays Harlan. Both teams should be the heavy favorite. Bell and Harlan County will be a huge district final, especially for seeding purposes.

Week 12 Rankings:

1. South Laurel (21-8): The Cardinals had a great week going 3-0. They started it off by beating Madison Central by 8. Followed that up with a 7 point win over Bell County. Then wrapped up a perfect week by knocking off Boyd County by 19. With that kind of week I think it propels them to the top spot. Jordan Mabe had a great game with 28 and 6 against Boyd. He also led the way with 19 against Bell County. After a tough stretch in the middle of the season, South is playing better ball than anyone in the region. They open up district play against Williamsburg.

2. Harlan County (22-8): The Black Bears went 1-0 this week. They knocked off Pineville by 17. Maddox Huff had a monster game with 37 points and knocked down 8 threes. Jaycee Carter was efficient as always and finished with 15 and 15. Their win streak is now at four games going into the district tournament .They are set to play Harlan in the first round.

3. Bell County (25-5): The Bobcats went 3-1 this week. They started their week off by taking a game at the last second against South Laurel. They traveled to London and faced their first set back in awhile, by dropping a 7 point game to South Laurel. They did rebound well with an 11 point win over Whitley County, a 19 point win over Barbourville, and a 25 point win over Ligon Cogo. They start district this week with Middlesboro in the first round.

4. Corbin (18-9): The Redhounds went perfect on the week going 2-0. They started it off with a 4 point win at Pineville. Ryder Akins had 25, and Evan Ellis had 16 in the win. Eli P also had a big game going for 14 and 14. The Hounds went 18-30 from the line in the win, definitely something they’ll want to clean up going into district. Corbin also knocked off Middlesboro on senior night by 63. The Redhounds open up district play with Whitley County. They split with the Colonels in the regular season.

5. North Laurel (17-10): The Jaguars had a decent week going 1-1. They knocked off Pulaski County on the road in the first one in a big time win over a 12th region contender. Reece Davidson had a double double with 11 and 13. Jordan Rawlings added 13 in the win. They did drop their next game to Taylor County on the road by 6. Davidson had a big game with 25 and 15 in the loss. North is set to start district tourney on Tuesday. They don’t know their opponent yet. It will be the winner of Red Bird or OBI. Both teams, the Jaguars have swept this season.

6. Knox Central (21-6): The Panthers had a solid week going 2-1. They started off with a dominating win over Williamsburg by 25. They then followed that up with a 31 point win over Harlan. Evan Taylor led the way with 16 in the win over the Green Dragons. They did end the regular season on a sour note though dropping a 6 point game to Perry County Central. Knox will open up the district tournament with Lynn Camp on Tuesday.

7. Clay County (20-6): The Tigers had two dominating wins over district opponents in OBI and Red Bird this week. They beat OBI by 39, and then beat Red Bird by 63. Adon Grubb had four dunks in the OBI game, I got to see those via X. Clay opens up district play against Jackson County on Tuesday. Neither game against Jackson County was remotely close this season.

8. Pineville (19-9): Pineville went 0-2 on the week but had two pretty big opponents in Corbin and Harlan County. The Corbin game went down to the wire where they eventually fell by four points. Sawyer Thompson had a huge game with 31, but Beck and Moser were only able to add 11 a piece. As a team they went 8-13 from the line. They lost to Harlan County by 17. They begin district play with Barbourville on Wednesday.

9. Whitley County (19-10): The Colonels went 1-1 on the week with a 23 point win over Harlan and an 11 point loss to Bell County. They played rather well in the Bell County game, but couldn’t string together enough stops to win the game. Riley Fuson had 17, Bryson Mahan added 16, and Levi Jackson had 12. Three solid games, and all three are freshmen. Whitley has a huge game with Corbin to open up the district. They split the season series, each team taking the road game.

10. Williamsburg (16-8): The Yellow Jackets went 1-1 on the week, with a 15 point win over Middlesboro but then a 25 point setback to Knox Central. Nate Goodin led the way with 16 in the win over Middlesboro. Williamsburg has their work cut out for them with South Laurel in the opening round of the district. They dropped both regular season games by 20 and 30.

11. Barbourville (17-12): The Tigers went 2-2 this week with wins over Jackson County and OBI, but losses to Model and Bell County. They open up the district tournament with Pineville. This is a game I think is very winnable for Barbourville. I wouldn't be shocked if they pulled the upset.

12. OBI (14-13): The Mountaineers went 1-2 this week with a win over Owsley County, but losses to Clay County and Barbourville. They open up the district in a play-in game with Red Bird tonight. If they win that, they’ll have North Laurel.

13. Jackson County (11-17): The Generals had a decent week going 1-1 with a win over Buckhorn and a loss to Barbourville. The Generals open up district play with a game at home against Clay County.

14. Harlan (5-24): The Green Dragons went 0-2 this week with losses to Whitley County and Knox Central. They’ve not ducked competition whatsoever this season. They open up the district with Harlan County.

15. Lynn Camp (7-21): The Campers went 2-0 this week with a win over Middlesboro and a win over Mount Pisgah. They open up the district tournament with Knox Central on Tuesday.

16. Middlesboro (8-20): The Yellowjackets went 0-3 on the week with losses to Williamsburg, Lynn Camp, and Corbin. They open up the district tournament with Bell County.

17. Red Bird (0-22): Unfortunately the Cardinals have gone winless on the season. They will have their last chance for a win tonight, as they play OBI at Jackson County. I hope for the sake of the Cardinals they can pull the win off.
