11th Region: Week 7

Featured Replies

Week seven saw better weather than week six, and with it a return to a full schedule.  The week was highlighted by a rematch of two of the region’s top teams, as Bryan Station and Frederick Douglass matched up for the second time this season.  That game featured the return of Aveion Chenault for the Broncos, even if in a limited role.  The week also featured the Bill Smallwood Classic at Berea, in which four 11th Region teams took part.  This far into the season, there seems to be a clear gap between the top 5 teams in the region and the rest.  Let’s see how things stand with a little over a month until the district tournaments start.

1.  Great Crossing (16-4)

The Warhawks went a perfect 3-0 this past week to push their winning streak to 8 games.  They started out the week by topping the century mark in a 105-55 walloping of Western Hills.  Eleven different players scored in this one for Great Crossing, with 5 of them finishing in double figures, led by Vince Dawson with 23.  Thursday saw another blowout as Great Crossing went on the road and took out Frankfort 78-43 behind 28 points and 19 rebounds from UK bound Malachi Moreno.  The Warhawks concluded their week with a 59-50 win over a good Lloyd Memorial squad at home.  Moreno and Dawson both went over 20 points in this one, with Moreno scoring 22 and Dawson adding 20.   Great Crossing is off until Saturday when they will square off against Male in the Dan Cummins Shootout at Scott County.

2. Frederick Douglass (12-2)

Due to the bad weather, Frederick Douglass didn’t play their first game of 2025 until Wednesday.  In an odd twist it was a rematch with Bryan Station, who they had played in their last game of 2024.  The Broncos, who won the first game 72-64, also came out on top in the rematch 58-52.  Juante Jenkins led the way for Douglass with 19 points and 8 rebounds in the win.  This game also saw the return of Aveion Chenault, albeit in a limited role.  He finished with 1 point and 2 rebounds.  The Broncos finished out the week with an 88-32 dismantling of Scott County at home.  Thirteen different players dented the scoring column in this one for Freddy D, with nine of them scoring at least six points.  Jenkins again led the way with 15 points.  Chenault was more of a factor in this one as he added 12 points and 5 rebounds.   The Broncos have three games on tap for this week, all matchups with 11th Region foes at home.  They begin the week on Tuesday with a matchup against Henry Clay.  On Saturday, they take on another regional contender in Madison Central, before closing out action on Saturday against Paul Laurence Dunbar.

3. Bryan Station (14-3)

The Defenders took on two of the top five teams in the region last week, both on the road, and split the two games.  On Wednesday Station had a rematch of their game on December 31st with Frederick Douglass.   As in the first game, the Defenders were not able to get past the Broncos, and they dropped this one 58-52.  Amari Owens went over the 20 point mark again in this one, as he finished with 22 points.  Taeshawn Adams added 15 points and 8 rebounds in a losing effort.  The Defenders didn’t have time to dwell on the loss, and they had to turn around and play Henry Clay two nights later.  Bryan Station was able to overcome the Blue Devils and pick up the 64-56 road win.  This week will see the Defenders play three games, all at home.   They open the week by hosting Madison Southern on Monday, before facing Mercer County on Tuesday.  Their slate concludes on Saturday when Scott County makes the trip to Lexington.

4. Henry Clay (11-3)

The Blue Devils split their two games last week.  They opened the week with an 82-59 blowout of Scott County on the road.  Kade Hilander drained 5 three pointers in the win to finish with 25 points.  Jackson Stephen added 24 points and 13 rebounds in the win.  Saturday saw Henry Clay suffer their first loss to an 11th Region team, as they fell to Bryan Station 64-56 at home.  This week will feature three tough matchups for the Devils.  They make the trip across town to face Frederick Douglass on Tuesday, then host Sayre on Friday.  They then conclude their week on Saturday in the Raising Cane’s J’Town Jam, where they will face the hosts, Jeffersontown.

5. Madison Central (12-4)

Madison Central entered the week on a two game losing streak.  The Indians put that behind them, however, and picked up a couple of blowout wins to get back on track.  On Tuesday they travelled to Nicholasville and picked up a 58-39 win over West Jessamine.  Jake Feldhaus poured in 24 points, and pulled in seven rebounds for the Indians in the win.  Saturday saw Central take part in the Bill Smallwood Classic at Berea, where they took on Whitley County.  This one was all Madison Central, as the Indians trampled the Colonels 94-65.  Feldhaus again paced the Indians 26 points and 8 boards.  Luke Asher and Will Richardson added 18 points each, while Cody Morrison joined them in double figures with 11.  Madison Central has 3 games this week, all on the road.   On Tuesday they make the trip to Stanford to take on Lincoln County.  That will be followed up by a game with Western Hills on Thursday, before a regional top 5 matchup against Frederick Douglass on Friday.

6. Sayre (11-4)

After taking the 11th Region All A championship last week, the Spartans had only a single game this week.  On Thursday they made the trip to Paul Laurence Dunbar, where they put a 90-50 beatdown on the Bulldogs to win their fourth game in a row.  Sayre placed 4 players in double figures in this one, led by Brock Coffman with 18.  Jaxson Howard scored 11, while Chase Parker and Caden Jones added 10 points each.   Sayre is scheduled to play Scott County on the road on Monday before heading to Owensboro to face Louisville Holy Cross in the All A Classic.

7. Lexington Catholic (8-8)

The Knights only had one game last week.  They went on the road and defeated Tates Creek in a barnburner, 59-58 to even their record at 8-8.  Hank Woodall led a balanced attack for Catholic with 14 points. Jacob Holland and Max Meagher each scored 13, while Jack Gambrell added 9.  Lexington Catholic has a full slate of 3 games this week.  They play a pair of home games on Monday and Thursday against Evangel Christian and Tates Creek, before taking part in the Dan Cummins Shootout at Scott County where they will square off against Johnson Central.

8. Frankfort (13-5)

The Panthers, who started off the season 11-1, have struggled a bit of late as the quality of competition has increased.  Frankfort went 1-2 last week, and have lost 4 of their last six games.   The week began well with an easy 64-38 win over Valley at home on Monday.  Three Panthers finished in double figures against the Vikings, led by Kiyas White with 18.  Eighth grader Cameron Crocker added 15 and Maxwell Jones joined him in double figures with 13.  Thursday brought a matchup with the region’s top team, Great Crossing.  The Panthers were simply overmatched in a 78-43 loss to the Warhawks.  That loss was followed by a 57-51 loss at home to crosstown rival Western Hills on Friday.  This week brings another crosstown matchup, as the Panthers go on the road to take on Franklin County on Friday in their only game this week.

9. Franklin County (7-7)

The Flyers started off slowly this season with losses in their first three games.  Since then, however, they have went 7-4 to even their record at 7-7.  They only had one game last week, a 68-53 road win over Shelby County.  Tyler Broyles led the Flyers in the win with 16 points.  Kaevin Russell and David Chong joined him in double figures with 15 and 13 respectively.   Franklin County has three games this week, two of them against county rivals.  The Flyers go on the road to face Western Hills on Wednesday, before returning home to host Frankfort and Dixie Heights on Friday and Saturday.

10. Madison Southern (8-9)

The Eagles went 2-1 last week.  They suffered a 79-70 home loss to Oldham County on Wednesday despite 24 points by Micah Whitaker.  Whitaker nailed 6 three pointers against the Colonels in the loss.  Southern was able to put the loss to Oldham County behind them, however, by picking up wins in their next two games.  On Friday, Madison Southern made the short trip to Model, where they downed the Patriots 79-62.  Casen Nobbe had a huge game in the win as he poured in 36 points for the Eagles.  The next day Southern participated in the Bill Smallwood Classic at Berea where they were matched up with Tates Creek.  Casen Nobbe output from Friday as he posted another 36 point game in 73-68 win over the Commodores.  There are 2 games on the schedule for the Eagles this week. On Monday the travel to Lexington to face Bryan Station before hosting Somerset on Tuesday.  There is a TBA game on Friday, but it isn’t clear on who or even if they will be playing.

11. Tates Creek (7-9)

The new year has not been kind to the Commodores, as they have yet to notch a win in 2025.  Tates Creek dropped all 3 games this week to fall below .500, and run their losing streak to 5 in a row.  They began the week by dropping a heartbreaker at home to Lexington Catholic 59-58.  That was followed by another home loss, this time to Dixie Heights 60-40.  The Commodores also took part in the Bill Smallwood Classic at Berea where they fell to Madison Southern 73-68.  The Creekers will look to notch their initial win of 2025 this week, but it won’t be easy given their competition in the 3 games they have scheduled.  On Tuesday they host one of the top teams in the 10th Region when George Rogers Clark comes to town.  That will be followed by a road game at Lexington Catholic on Thursday before they head to Mt. Vernon to play Knox Central in the Rocket Classic.

12. Western Hills (5-8)

The Wolverines went 1-1 last week.  They were destroyed by regional number one Great Crossing 102-55 on Monday, before bouncing back with a 57-51 win over Frankfort in a rivalry game.  Western Hills has a full four game slate this week.  They host Bluegrass United on Monday before taking on archrival Franklin County on Wednesday, and Madison Central on Thursday.  They compete the week with a tilt on the road against Ryle on Saturday.

13. Berea (6-9)

The Pirates went 2-0 for the week to break a four game losing skid.  On Tuesday they defeated Bluegrass United 61-37.  Berea placed 4 players in double figures in the game paced by Finley Blevins with 14.  Ethan Slone and Jack Hemenway both added 10 in the win.  On Saturday the Pirates hosted the Bill Smallwood Classic where they were matched up with Bishop Brossart.  They had little trouble with the Mustangs in an 88-68 blowout.  They will look to build on that momentum this week.  On Tuesday they host Southwestern, before hitting the road to take on Barbourville on Thursday and Frankfort Christian on Saturday.

14. Lafayette (6-10)

The Generals are our biggest riser this week.  They have rebounded from a tough 0-6 start, and have went 6-4 over their last 10 games.  Lafayette went a perfect 3-0 last week.  They began the week with a 73-53 road win at Paul Laurence Dunbar before returning home to take down Bluegrass United 94-67 on Thursday.  They then closed out the week with another road win, this time at Harrison County where they defeated the Thorobreds 60-47.  They will try to build on that winning streak this week with three games.  The Generals host Lexington Christian on Tuesday and Paul Laurence Dunbar in a couple of winnable games.  The then close out the week on the road at Henry Clay.

15. Model (7-9)

Model went 2-1 last week.  They picked up a home win over Nelson County 67-56, behind 22 points from Harrison Parkhurst and Travis Kidd, who added 21.  The Patriots dropped their next game, however, to rival Madison Southern 79-62.  Travis Kidd and Marcello Zorzi both scored 17 points in the loss, Zorzi also pulled down 15 rebounds.  Model bounced back with a blowout win over Lynn Camp, 81-43 in the Bobby Keith Classic at Clay County to round out their week.  They have three games on the schedule this week.  They host Babourville on Tuesday, and Burgin on Friday.  They then go on the road to play Nicholas County on Saturday.

16. Lexington Christian (7-9)

The Eagles had only one game last week, a loss on the road to Lincoln County 68-49.  LCA struggled with their shooting in the game as they finished at 38% and went a frigid 5-28 on three pointers.  Saxton Howard led the Eagles in scoring with 15 points and freshman Caleb Marshall added 13.  LCA has two games this week, both road tilts.  They play Lafayette on Thursday before travelling to Meade County on Thursday.

17. Scott County (4-10)

Scott County had a tough week, as they went 0-3 against some tough competition.  The week began with an 82-59 loss to Henry Clay.  Colton Helton hit 5 three pointers and finished with 21 points in the loss to the Blue Devils.  That was followed by an 88-32 thumping at the hands of Frederick Douglass, and a 95-76 setback to Knox Central in the Bobby Keith Classic at Clay County.   They will try to shrug off the tough week, and get back in the win column on Monday when they host Sayre.  Later in the week they travel to Bryan Station before hosting the Dan Cummins Shootout on Saturday where they will be matched up with Bourbon County.

18. Paul Laurence Dunbar (2-12)

The Bulldogs had a tough week.  They went 0-3, with each loss coming at home by double digits.  They dropped their first game of the week at home to Lafayette 73-53.  That was followed up by a 90-50 blowout at the hands of Sayre, and a 65-53 loss to Garrard County.  The competition this week might make it hard for PLD to right the ship.  They have three games, all on the road: Woodford County, Lafayette and Frederick Douglass.

1.  Great Crossing (16-4)

Do you know anything about starting senior point guard Junius Burrell no longer being on the team? He last played on January 9th and is no longer listed on their roster on the KHSAA web site.

According to the Herald Leader, Burrell left the team the day of the Cathedral game.  In the article Coach Page left open the door that Burrell might rejoin the team, but does not expect him back.
