16th Region News and Notes

• Bradley Robinson has made a splash in Flemingsburg after coming over from Bourbon County. The senior guard is averaging 21 ppg this season and recently had a strong showing in the AIT. He lit up Mason County last week in Maysville for 31 points, including seven threes. His presence makes the Panthers a legitimate threat to Ashland, despite the loss of Adam Hargett, last season's region player of the year.

• The days of the Carter County civil war are numbered, so savor it while you can. West is relishing the latest chapter, a 60-59 takedown of East to end a six game skid to the Raiders. Per usual, it was a spirited affair, with Jacob Waddell featured in a starring role. He scored a game high 22, none bigger than the clutch free throws he sank in the final seconds to win the game. West was out front early by as many as eight, with East battling back to lead by seven in the 3Q before the Comets made a final push, sealed by Waddell's trip to the foul line.

• The 16th Region All “A” Tournament got underway on Saturday. The joy of West Carter's triumph over East was short lived, as the Comets were dispatched by Elliott County in the first round two nights later. The other first round game saw Morgan County put five in double figures to rout Menifee for the second time this season. The Cougars are on a modest three game win streak, but it's enough to jump them a few spots in the rankings this week.

• Russell was in the midst of its longest run of futility since 2016. Seven games had come and gone since the last win. The losing streak ended at home in grand fashion, as the Devils pounced on Lewis County to lead 23-4 early in the 2Q and never let the Lions in the game. Lewis' Julian Puente (18 ppg this season) was limited to just four points.

• Rowan County fended off a second half rally by Greenup County to beat the Musketeers by five after leading by as much as sixteen. Gavin Mirus recorded a double-double of 16 & 10.

• The 16th's two brightest individual stars both shined in limited action last week. Zander Carter and Jacob Spurlock only played one game each, but made their mark in victories for Ashland and Boyd. Carter flirted with a triple double (24/8/9) against Corbin, while Spurlock dropped 33 on Bath County, including six threes.

Player Of The Week
Jacob Waddell (West Carter) - Spurlock and Carter posted gaudier numbers, but in the interest of preventing those two from running a monopoly on POW recognition, Waddell gets the nod for a career high 22 points and 8 rebounds in the most hotly contested game in the region last week. It also happened to be the the East/West rivalry and he put the Comets ahead at the charity stripe in the closing moments.

Excellent breakdown @DevilMayCare! And I agree with you on Fleming County. Buddy ball is fun to watch and Bradley Robinson seems so comfortable and is thriving in the system. They defeated both Ashland and Boyd County last season and I'm sure they'll be a threat to both again.

Russell is another interesting one to highlight. Lewis County is an excellent win for them. It seems like their chemistry is starting to come around and that will certainly make things interesting. The 63rd is one tough district. Lewis County went 1/23 from downtown in that game. Coming into it they were only shooting 25% from three point range. I anticipate that will be a target of their practices in the coming weeks. Even though they have struggled shooting, I feel like their shooters have the potential to be threats from the outside.

Raceland, Elliott, having nice years and now Morgan County starting to get things figured out with their young team. Lots of excitement!
