All State Baseball Posted January 5 Posted January 5 We are officially halfway through the season and this region has been a crazy ride so far. Hazard defeated Breathitt County twice within days of each other, as dominate as Hazard is and struggling as Perry County Central has been, Hazard only defeated PCC by 3 at Hazard. Powell County cruised past Knott County Central, who beat Estill County at Estill but then beat Powell. Jenkins comes in at 11-1. Rankings 1) Hazard (12-1): Leslie County (58-42 W), Madison Central (66-57 W). This Week: N/A. Hazard added two more wins to the win column last week, defeating district foe, Leslie County 58-42, running their district record to 4-0. The Bulldogs on Saturday would make the trip down the Mountain Parkway and down 627 to George Rogers Clark High school to participate in the Tim Short Automotive Classic. Injured Evin Eversole would led the Bulldogs past the Indians 66-57. 2) Breathitt County (8-3): Good Hope AL (75-73 W), Letcher County Central (67-48 W). This Week: Monday 1/6 vs. Wolfe County. Breathitt County defeated Good Hope Alabama 75-73 in a thriller to win the South Walton Beach Blowout Tournament in Florida. Austin Sperry and Braxton Terry each had 19 points. Sophomore Payton Collins added 17 in the win. Breathitt County was 32/68 from the field. As soon as the Bobcats returned home, they had to hit the road again, this time they made the short trip up to Whitesburg to take on the Cougars of Letcher County Central. Breathitt County wouldn't have any issues out of the Cougars as they would let out the loudest roar in a 67-48 win. 3) Perry County Central (7-6): N/A. This Week: Tuesday 1/7 vs. South Laurel. The Commodores had the week off last week. 4) Powell County (7-4): Harlan Ind. (86-71 W), Estill County (58-57 L). This Week: Thursday 1/9 at Montgomery County (Powell County defeated Montgomery County 65-64 earlier in the season). The Harlan Ind. game was part of East Jessamine's tournament last weekend, score wasn't reported at the time of last week's rankings drop. The Pirates made the trip to Irvine to take on the Engineers, not in a district contest but in the KY 2A Section 6 Tournament. It took a little while for both teams to get going but once they did, at first, it was all Powell County, leading 5-4 at one point and 18-12 after one. The Engineers would outscore the Pirates 15-12 in the second quarter to only be behind by 3 at halftime. Second half, both teams went back and forth, tying and trading leads. With 4.2 seconds left and up 1, Estill would miss two FT's, Powell County star, Bryson Edwards running 1-handed 3 pointer at the buzzer was off, giving the Engineers a 58-57 win over the Pirates. Estill County's Jax Niece was named National Guard Player of the Game. Jax was a bully in the paint all night and when the inside wasn't working, he would step outside and drop in 3 pointers. The Pirates have now dropped three of they're last four games. 5) Knott County Central (6-6): Owsley County (69-31 W), Floyd Central (56-44 W - Throwback game at Allen Central Gym). This Week: Monday 1/6 vs. Cordia. The Patriots extended they're win streak to three straight after picking up two more wins last week, defeating Owsley County 69-31 and Floyd Central 56-44 at the old Allen Central gym. 6) Estill County (7-6): Powell County (58-57 W). This Week: Tuesday 1/7 vs. Boyd County (at Rowan County - KY 2A Champioships Tournament), Friday 1/10 vs. Buckhorn. The Engineers welcomed in the district foe, Pirates of Powell County, in what would be a non-district contest, as this was part of the KY 2A Championship Tournament. Both teams struggled to get going but once they did, it was Powell County that get the upper hand first, leading 18-12 after 1, Estill county would then outscore the Pirates 15-12 to cut the Pirates lead to 3 at halftime, 27-30. Pirates edged out the Engineers 17-16 in the third to take a four point lead into the fourth and final quarter, 47-43. Engineers would hold the Pirates to just 10 points in the fourth. Estill County, leading 58-57 with 4.2 left, would miss two crucial free throws, Powell County's Bryson Edwards three point attempt to win the game at the buzzer, would be off, giving the Engineers the 58-57 win. 7) Letcher County Central (7-7): June Buchanan (68-21 W), Breathitt County (67-48 L). This Week: Monday 1/6 vs. Jenkins. The Cougars would pick up they're second district win on the season, defeating June Buchanan 68-21, which would extend they're win streak to 3 games. That, however, would be short lived as they would fall to Breathitt County 67-48, ending they're winning streak. The Cougars had won 4 of they're last 5 games going into the Breathitt County game. 8 ) Jenkins (11-1): Palm Harbor University FL (63-50 W), Buckhorn (80-50 W). This week: Monday 1/6 at Letcher County Central, Friday 1/10 at Lee County. Jenkins picked up two more wins, giving them 11 on the season. The Cavaliers picked up wins over both Palm Harbor University FL 63-50 and Buckhorn 80-50. 4 players (Adyn Hayes 15, Bradyn Sexton 15, Gavin Gibson 15, Cameron Hayes 14) combined for 59 of the Cavaliers 63 points in the win over Palm Harbor. 9) Leslie County (7-6): Arab AL (65-51 L), Hazard (58-42 L). This Week: No Games. With two more losses this week, the Eagles have now dropped 3 straight and four of they're last six games. Two of those three losses came in the South Walton Beach Touranment to Good Hope AL and Arab AL. The other loss was a district loss to Hazard. 10) Wolfe County (5-7): Somerset Christian School (81-74 W). This Week: Monday 1/6 at Breathitt County (Breathitt County defeated Wolfe County 79-53 earlier in the season). Wolfe County picked up a home game on Saturday with Somerset Christian School. The Wolves would be victorious, defeating the Cougars 81-74. The win snapped a three game losing skid. 11) Buckhorn (5-7): Lee County (77-64 W), Jenkins (80-50 L). This Week: Friday 1/10 at Estill County. Buckhorn's loss to Jenkins, snapped a four game win streak for the Wildcats. 12) Lee County (5-9): Jackson City (67-61 W), Buckhorn (77-64 L). This Week: Monday 1/6 at Owsley County, Friday 1/10 at Jenkins. The Bobcats split two games last week, defeating Jackson City 67-61 before falling to Buckhorn, once again, 77-64. Twice within a week that Lee County has lost to Buckhorn. 13) Owsley County (2-11): Knott County Central (69-31 L). This Week: Monday 1/6 vs. Lee County (Owsley County lost to Lee County 70-67 earlier in the season). The Owls losing skid has now reached 7 straight games. 6 of those were not even close. 14) Jackson City (2-8): Lee County (67-61 L). This Week: Friday 1/10 at Lynn Camp, Saturday 1/11 vs. Red Bird. Jackson City has dropped four in a row after the loss to Lee County this past weekend. 15) Cordia (2-8): N/A. This Week: Monday 1/6 vs. Knott County Central. The Lions was off last week and thus remain at #15 this week. They will probably be in the same spot, all year. 16) June Buchanan (0-11): Letcher County Central (68-21 L). This Week: Saturday 1/11 vs. Casey County. Either the June Buchanan Crusaders or the Casey County Rebels will get they're first win on the season on Saturday. 1 1
