Carl Spackler Posted December 24, 2024 Posted December 24, 2024 The holiday tournaments really got going last week, which resulted in some good matchups, both with in state, and out of state teams. We did have some movement in our rankings, including a new number one team. Bryan Station takes over the number one spot, after a good showing in the Chad Gardner Law King of the Bluegrass tournament, and a rough week from previous number one Great Crossing. Sayre, who has all of their football players back in the fold, made the biggest jump in the rankings. With Christmas falling in the middle of the week, most teams have a light schedule this week, until Friday when another round of holiday tournaments get going. Let’s get to them. Team (Record) 1. Bryan Station (7-1) The Defenders did suffer their first loss of the season, against out of state foe Bryant, AR. However, they did have a strong showing in the King of the Bluegrass with a 2-1 record. They opened the tournament with a 72-43 blowout of Newport behind 20 points by Amari Owens. After dropping a 74-64 contest against Bryant, they bounced back with 63-54 win over South Laurel, followed by a 69-66 win over Woodford County to finish 5th in the prestigious tournament. Owens was named to the all-tournament team after averaging 28.8 points over the 4 games. Station is off until the 27th, when they will take on Boyd County in the first round of the WGM Holiday Tournament at Lexington Catholic. 2. Great Crossing (7-3) It was a tough week in Florida for the Warhawks. They dropped their first 2 games in the City of Palms Classic in Fort Myers, to run their losing streak to 3 games. In the opening round they were matched up with the number 1 team in the nation, Miami’s Christopher Columbus, led by Duke commits the Boozer twins. Great Crossing was simply no match for the Explorers in a 90-39 beatdown. That was followed up with a competitive, 81-72 loss to Westminster Academy out of Fort Lauderdale. Vince Dawson paced 4 Warhawks in double figures in the game with 20 points. Great Crossing did get a nice win in the consolation bracket against Bishop McNamara (MD) 86-84. Malachi Moreno (39) and Dawson (23) were lights out and combined for 62 of the Warhawk’s 86 points. This week finds Great Crossing again heading out of state, where they will take on Windermere Prep in the first round of the Beachball Classic in Myrtle Beach. 3. Henry Clay (6-1) Henry Clay had a perfect 3-0 week in week 3. They began the week with a 90-60 blowout of East Jessamine. The Blue Devils placed 5 players in double figures against the Jaguars led by Kayson Brown, who hit 5 of 7 three pointers to finish with 19 points. Henry Clay then notched an impressive road win over 12th Region contender Pulaski County, 73-54. They followed that win up with an 80-34 dismantling of Spring Hill (TN). The Devils will be back in action this week when they will take on West Jessamine in the first round of the Central Bank Jim Rose Classic at Lexington Christian Academy. 4. Frederick Douglass (6-2) Frederick Douglass was also part of the King of the Bluegrass, and like fellow 11th Region member Bryan Station, they also had a good showing. The Broncos went 3-1 in the tournament to finish with in 3rd place. Frederick Douglass opened up the tournament with a 72-64 win over Male. In the second round they blew out the Fairdale, the host team, 77-45 behind 23 points and 9 rebounds from DeMarcus Surratt. The Broncos then dropped a 72-55 decision eventual tournament champion, and the state’s number 1 ranked team, St. Xavier. They bounced back in the 3rd place game against North Oldham with an 81-69 victory. DeMarcus Surratt was chosen for the all-tournament team for his efforts in the 4 games. Freddy D is back in action on the 27th when they will take on Cooper in the first round of the WGM Holiday Tournament at Lexington Catholic. 5. Madison Central (7-2) After suffering their first 2 losses of the season in week 2, Madison Central bounced back in a big way as they produced a perfect 3-0 record last week. They began the week by dominating Scott County 92-52 at home. They followed that up with a 71-59 win over crosstown rival Madison Southern. To end the week, they stepped out of the region to take on Southwestern on the road. The Indians placed 5 players in double figures, led by Luke Asher’s 22 points, as they coasted to an 87-62 win. The balanced scoring has been a regular occurrence for Central this season as 4 Indians average double figures. Asher leads the team in scoring with 21.4 points per game, while Jake Feldhaus is averaging a double double with 18 points and 13.4 boards per game. Madison Central will host the Richmond Car and Truck Center Holiday Classic this week. They will begin the tournament by taking on Paul Laurence Dunbar on Friday. 6. Lexington Catholic (5-3) Lexington Catholic travelled to Florida last week for a pair of games. They stared the trip off the right way with a 69-59 win over Dwyer (FL). Their next game did not go as well however, as they were blown out by Stranahan (Fort Lauderdale, FL) 71-38. That loss broke a 4 game win streak for the Knights. They will get back in action on Friday night at 600pm, when they will take on defending state champion Lyon County at home as part of the WGM Holiday Tournament. The 16 team tournament features fellow 11th Region members Frederick Douglass and Bryan Station as well as Woodford County, Newport, Trinity, and DuPont Manual amongst the field. 7. Tates Creek (5-4) After a great start to the season, that saw Tates Creek surpass their win total for the entire 23-24 season, the wheels came off for the Commodores last week. Tates Creek went 0-3, all on the road. On Tuesday the dropped a 59-68 game to LaFayette that produced the first win of the season for the Generals. That was followed by a blowout at the hands of the Sayre Spartans 77-40. The Creekers did bounce back on Saturday when they suffered a narrow 54-52 loss at the hands of 12th Region contender Mercer County. Stephan Franklin paced the Commodores in scoring as he put up 19.3 points per game for the week. Tates Creek will try to right the ship on Friday when they make the short trip down Highway 27 to take on Pike County Central in the first round of the State Farm Holiday Basketball Tournament at East Jessamine. 8. Frankfort (7-1) Coach Ed McKinney has the Panthers rolling so far in his first season at the helm in Frankfort. His team went 2-0 this week to push their record to a surprising 7-1. They opened the week with a hard-fought 55-49 victory at home against DeSales. They followed that up with a 16 point win over Bluegrass United, 68-52. That record should continue to improve as their schedule strength really doesn’t pick up until they take on Great Crossing at home on January 16th. This week they will take part in the Burgin Bulldog Winter Classic where they will take on Fort Knox on Friday, before playing a double header on Saturday against Shawnee and Casey County. 9. Sayre (4-2) After dropping their first 2 contests to open the season, the Spartan have reeled off 4 straight wins, 3 of them against 11th Region competition. As the football players have gotten back in the fold Sayre has rounded into form. Last week saw them post a perfect 3-0 record. They began the week with a 77-40 home win over Tates Creek. That was followed by two wins in their Republic Bank-Lankster Classic, which they hosted. They took out Lafayette 62-37 in the first round, before besting 12th Region contender West Jessamine 57-47 behind 19 points and 8 boards by Brock Coffman. The senior has made a huge difference for the Spartans in the 3 games that he has played after helping the Spartans football team to a State Championship. The senior has averaged 16 points and 7.3 rebounds in the 3 games that he has played in, all wins by Sayre. The Spartans play in the finals of their tournament on Monday night against Fern Creek, before taking off for the holiday. They will take part in the FNB Holiday Classic at Marshall County on the 28th where their opponent has yet to be announced. 10. Lexington Christian (3-4) Eagles continued their win one, lose one pattern last week as they split a pair of games. So far this season LCA has not won, or lost, 2 games in a row. Their week started with a 68-62 win on the road against Paul Laurene Dunbar behind 28 points from senior Howard Saxton. That win was followed by a blowout loss, at the hands of Lewis County in the 2024 Stockyards Bank Challenge at Rowan County. The Eagles will be back in action on Friday in the Central Bank Jim Rose Challenge at Lexington Catholic. Their opponent is not listed on the scoreboard. 11. Franklin County (4-5) The Flyers struggled out of the gate as they started out 0-3 to begin the season. They have since won 4 of 6, including going 3-2 in a busy week 3. They picked up a pair of wins to open the week, 60-51 on the road a Madison Southern, and a home victory over Collins 44-25. They then went 1-2 in the 2024 Gateway Holiday Classic at Montgomery County. They opened the tournament with narrow loss at the hands of Graves County 40-41. Beroe dropping another close one to Taft (Cincinnati, OH), 50-57. The did bounce back in their final game in the tournament when they handled Central 80-61. In an odd twist of fate, the Flyers will again take on Central on Friday in the City of Middletown Holiday Classic at Eastern. 12. Madison Southern (3-5) The Eagles struggled in weeks 3 with a 1-3 record. The dropped a pair of 11th Region games to open the week, 51-60 at home to Franklin County, and 59-71 at crosstown rival Madison Central. They then took part in the Redmond Auto Group Holiday Classic at Bell County. They opened the tournament with a 69-33 blowout of East Ridge (Chattanooga, TN), before losing a 56-58 heartbreaker at Knoxville Christian Academy. This week Southern finishes out the tournament against Campbell County (TN) on Monday before taking part in the Richmond Car and Truck Holiday Classic at Madison Central where they will take on Lincoln County. 13. Western Hills (3-5) The Wolverines bounced back from a 1-4 start to their season to go 2-1 last week. They got wins over St. Henry (57-49) and East Jessamine (72-63), while losing an 83-63 road game to Grant County. They will be back in action on Friday when they take on Rockcastle County in the Central Bank Jim Rose Classic at Lexington Christian Academy. 14. Berea (3-5) The Pirates split 4 games in week 3, all at home. They began the week with a narrow 78-73 loss to Corbin. They then hosted the Berea Holiday Classic when they downed Jackson City 59-31 in the opening round, and Paris 76-53 in the semifinals. They ran out of gas in the finals, where they dropped a 58-46 decision to Garrard County. Berea does not have an opponent listed this week, but has a TBD on the 26th. 15. Model (3-5) Model went 2-2 in week 3. They began the week with a pair of two point losses, 58-56 at Powell County, and 53-51 to Williamsburg in the Wildcat Classic at Lynn Camp. They rebounded with a pair of wins in the tournament, 61-29 over Lynn Camp, and 63-50 over Middlesboro. The Patriots have a pair of games scheduled this week in the Cumberland Falls Invitational Tournament. They open up on Friday against Somerset, and take on Bell County on Sunday. 16. Scott County (2-6) The Cardinals were 0-3 on the week, with all 3 losses coming by double digits. They lost at Madison Central 92-52, before losing a pair at home, 70-56 against Collins, and 78-53 to Vestavia Hills (Birmingham, AL). Scott County is off until after the New Year, when they will take on West Jessamine on January 3rd. 17. Lafayette (1-7) The Generals picked up their first win of the season against Tates Creek at home by a score of 68-59 to open the week. They then lost a game in the Republic Bank-Lankster Classic at Sayre, 62-67 against Sayre. This week they conclude play in that tournament against Clay County on Monday night before taking part in the State Farm Holiday Basketball Tournament at East Jessamine on Friday. There, they will face Powell County at 245PM. 18. Laurence Dunbar (1-6) The Bulldogs went 0-2 in week, with a pair of close losses. They stated out the week with a 68-62 home loss to Lexington Christian Academy before going on the road and suffering a 59-58 setback to Pendleton County. PLD is back in action on Friday in the Richmond Car and Truck Center Holiday Classic where they will take on the hosts, Madison Central. 2 1
