Merry Christmas to all BGPers. 

Let's dig into some basketball action that took place over the past week and weekend with most teams participating in holiday tournaments, not just only in Kentucky but also in other states, like Tennessee, Florida, Ohio. 

 

THE TOP 10!

 

1) Hazard (8-0):  64-61 W over Perry County Central, 57-35 W over Leslie County.

This Week: Smoky Mountain Winter Classic at Gatlinburg TN. Bulldogs open up with Madison County GA. They will then play either McMinn County TN or Marion County KY. Game 3 will see them take on one of the following four teams: East Hall GA/Lebannon TN or Pikeville/Lenior City TN.

Can anyone stop the Hazard Bulldogs? They've been tested early this season and have defeated every team put in they're path. Teams such as Breathitt County (twice), Ashland, Harlan County and Perry County Central, all of which are top teams in they're respective regions. The Bulldogs edged out Perry County Central 64-61 on Tuesday and cruised past Leslie County 57-35 on Thursday, both of which are district wins for the Bulldogs. 5, yes 5 of Hazard's 8 wins, have come by double digits. Hazard is led by a two-headed monster in Senior Evin Eversole and junior Seth Caudill. Evin is averaging a double-double a game at 20 and 10 a game. Seth Caudill is averaging 14 points a game. 

 

2) Breathitt County (4-3):  79-53 W over Wolfe County, 72-55 W over Christian County, 69-57 L to Ryle.

This Week: South Walton FL Tournament. They open up with Bayside Academy AL. 

Can Breathitt County re-group and get the Den back under control? Breathitt County picked up a big road district win last week, defeating Wolfe County in the Wolves Den 79-53. Bobcats would take on the KY Bank Rowan County Challenge, where they would take on Christian County (72-55 Win) and Ryle (69-57 Loss). Austin Sperry, Braxton Terry, Payton Collins and Austin McInnis all had double digit in scoring in the win over Wolfe County. Austin Sperry lead the way for the Bobcats in the Christian County win with 27 points. Aaron Stallard added 18 in the win. Sperry had 23 in the loss to Ryle.

 

3) Perry County Central (5-5): 64-61 L to Hazard, 56-51 W over University School Nashville TN, 66-42 W over Falkner MS, 52-51 L to Loretto TN.

This Week: at Thomas Nelson Tournament, they will take on Madisonville North Hopkins.

The Commodores split four games last week, going 2-2, They dropped a hear breaker to crosstown rival, Hazard 64-61. They would make they're way to Gatlinburg to take part in the Smoky Mountain Christmas Classic Green Bracket.  They would open up with a 56-51 win over University School of Nashville and followed that up with a 66-42 win over Falkner MS before falling to Loretto TN 52-51 in the championship game of the green bracket. 

 

4) Powell County (6-1): 66-58 W over West Carter, 58-56 W over Model.

This Week: State Farm Holiday Tournament at East Jessamine. They open with Lafayette.

The Pirates extended they're win streak to 6 straight this past week by adding two more wins to they're resume, defeating both West Carter 66-58 and edging out Model in a thriller 58-56. Riley Faulkner (19) and Tucker Ramsey (15) led the Pirates in scoring in the win over West Carter. Bryson Edwards led the Pirates with 15 in the win over Model.

 

5) Knott County Central (3-4): 61-48 W over Letcher County Central, 91-50 W over June Buchanan.

This Week: at Estill County Railroad Classic: Friday vs. Boyle County, Saturday vs. Dixie Heights, Sunday at Estill County.

Knott County Central picked up back to back wins this past week, district wins at that, defeating Letcher County Central 61-48 and June Buchanan 91-50.

 

6) Estill County (6-4): 76-74 W over Garrard County, 79-51 L to Landrum SC, 69-59 L to Pineville, 72-51 L to Hurricane WV.

This Week: Railroad Classic at home. Friday vs. Dixie Heights, Saturday vs. Boyle County, Sunday vs. Knott County Central.

Engineers picked up a big road win at Garrard County but would drop all three games in the Smoky Mountain Classic Red Bracket, falling to Landrum SC 79-51, a team they beat just two years ago in this same tournament,  They would take on Pineville in the loser's bracket, the Mountain Lions would derail the Engineers 69-59 and lastly, Estill County would play Hurricane WV in the last place game in the Red Bracket, the Engineers were no match for the Hurricane as they would fall 72-51. 

 

7) Letcher County Central (4-5): 85-43 W over Cordia, 61-48 L to Knott County Central, 81-38 W vs. Francis Parker, 53-43 L to Garrard County, 87-74 W vs. Paris.

This Week: Bath County Dan Swartz Classic. Cougars will open with the home team, Wildcats on Friday. 

After, having a week off, the Cougars were back in action this past week, starting on Monday where they defeated district opponent, Cordia 85-43. Things would be a little tougher on Tuesday as they would travel to district foe, Knott County Central, with Knott County Central winning 61-48. The Cougars would then make the long haul down to Berea to participate in the Berea Holiday Classic, they picked up an opening round win over Francis Parker 81-38, Letcher Central would advance into the winners bracket, facing Garrard County in the semi-finals, the Cougars were no match for the Golden Lions as Garrard County would get the best of the Cougars, 53-43. Letcher County Central would take on  and defeat Paris 87-74 in the third place game.

 

8 ) Leslie County (6-3): 77-51 L to Betsy Layne, 80-44 W vs. Buckhorn, 57-35 L to Hazard, 58-49 W vs. OBI.

This Week: South Walton FL Tournament, Leslie County opens up with Tupelo Christian Prep, MS.

The Eagles split four games this past week. They started the week off with a road loss to Betsy Layne 77-51, Tripp Brashear led the Eagles with 15 in the loss. Next up was a 80-44 win over Buckhorn. Jesse Hoskins led the Eagles with 21, Tripp Brashear added 15 in the win. Leslie County would host another district foe in Hazard, The Eagles couldn't catch up to the Bulldogs as the Bulldogs ran away with the win, 57-35. Jayden Hacker had 20 of the Eagles 35 points in the loss. Leslie County would bounce back and defeat OBI 58-49. Jayden Hacker and Jesse Hoskins combined for 42 of the Eagles 58 points in the win.

 

9) Jenkins (8-0): 79-42 W over Jackson City, 67-46 W over JJ Burton VA, 80-38 W over Owsley County. 

This Week: Off.

The Cavaliers remain un-beaten after picking up three more wins this past week, defeating Jackson City, Owsley County and JJ Burton VA. When will the Cavs suffer they're first loss? Can they keep up the momentum?

 

10) Wolfe County (4-4): 79-53 L to Breathitt County, 101-60 L to Gatlinburg-Pittman TN, 73-18 W over Jumpertown MS, 46-40 W over Calvary Christian.

This Week: Garrard County 4 Banks Classic. Friday vs. Washington County, Saturday at Garrard County, Sunday vs. Cumberland County.

Much like several teams did this past week, the Wolves also split four of they're games, going 2-2. The Wolves welcomed in the Breathitt County Bobcats in a big 55th district matchup in Campton, it will be a game that Wolfe County will hope to forget as they fell to the Bobcats 79-53. The Wolves then would make the trip to Gatlinburg TN to take part in the Smoky Mountain Classic. They opened up with the host school, Gatlinburg-Pittman and it wouldn't be a pretty match up as the Wolves would fall to Gatlinburg-Pittman by 41, 101-40. The Wolves would bounce back, however and win they're next two games in the Smoky Mountain Classic, defeating Jumpertown MS with ease 73-18 and Calvary Christian 46-40.

 

ANY MOVEMENT?:

11) Buckhorn (1-6): 80-44 L to Leslie County, 68-44 L to OBI, 80-43 L to Knox Central.

This Week: Buckhorn Tournament (Friday vs. June Buchanan, Saturday vs. Cordia, Sunday vs. Lee County).

The L's continue to pile up for the Wildcats. They've dropped 6 straight and they haven't been any where near close.

 

12) Lee County (1-7): 70-67 W over Owsley County, 78-49 L to Heritage Academy.

This Week: at June Buchanan, at Buckhorn Tournament (Friday vs. Cordia, Saturday vs. June Buchanan, Sunday at Buckhorn).

The Bobcats finally picked up they're first win on the season and a district win at that, defeating Owsley County 70-67.

 

13) Owsley County (2-9): 70-67 L to Lee County, 86-41 L to Knox Central, 80-38 L to Jenkins.

This Week: Off.

The losses continue to pile up for the Owls. The loss of Andrew Terry has been hurting the Owls.

 

14) Jackson City (2-6): 72-49 L to Jenkins, 59-31 L to Berea.

This Week: Off.

The Tigers dropped two more games and have now lost 6 on the season. All of they're losses have been by 15+.

 

15) Cordia (1-6): 85-43 L to Letcher County Central, 55-43 W over Red Bird.

This Week: At Buckhorn Tournament (Friday vs. Lee County, Saturday at Buckhorn, Sunday vs. June Buchanan).

The Lions finally picked up win #1 by defeating Red Bird Christian 55-43.

 

16) June Buchanan (0-6): 91-50 L to Knott County Central, 96-32 L to Magoffin County.

This Week: vs. Lee County, at Buckhorn Tournament (Friday at Buckhorn, Saturday vs. Lee County, Saturday vs. Cordia).

The Crusaders are young, in fact, they only have 1 junior on they're team. The rest are sophomores and 7th / 8th graders.
