3A Quarterfinal Matchups

Featured Replies

#6 Central at #1 CAL

#4 Union County at #3 Hart County

#8 LexCath at #2 Bell County

#7 Russell at #5 Belfry

Rankings listed are overall RPI rankings for each team. Is this the class with the most competitive slate of Region Championship games? Which home team do you think is at the greatest risk of being "upset"?

I think the only home team that would surprise me if they lost would be Belfry.  The other three games wouldn't be upsets in my opinion other than the RPI ranking.  In fact, Central has already beaten CAL by 20 this year so that definitely wouldn't be an upset if they beat them again.

Agree. That's why I left upset in quotations, I believe 3A has the most competitive slate of 3rd Round games this year, anything could happen.

Based off the RANKINGS, Central beating CAL would be the most likely upset. Yet, the earlier win by the Yellow Jackets was a home win, so now that they are on CAL's turf, in the cold, that could very well turn the tide.

Can LexCath make the drive to Bell Co., and upset them? I really doubt it.

Semi-Finals Scenarios, hope this helps out.

I am taking this from the approach of Belfry & Russell but this should give us all scenarios. Class 3A isn't too complex because of how the seeding plays out.

The Union County vs. Hart County game is static. Essentially those guys have the same exact scenarios since they are successive seeds.

Belfry Win Scenarios
Belfry HOST Scenario- Requires both a CAL and Bell County loss. Belfry hosts Central, winner of Hart/Union hosts LexCath.

Belfry AWAY Scenarios:
Scenario 1: If Central wins, but Bell wins.
Bell hosts Central. Belfry travels to Union/Hart winner.

Scenario 2: If CAL wins and Bell wins.
Belfry travels to CAL, Bell hosts Union/Hart winner.

Scenario 3: If CAL wins and LexCath wins.
Cal hosts LexCath. Belfry travels to Union/Hart winner.

Russell win scenario:
HOST- No options

AWAY Option
Scenario 1: If Central wins and LexCath wins.
Hart/Union winner hosts Russell. Central hosts LexCath.

Scenario 2: If Central wins and Bell County wins.
Bell County hosts Russell. Hart/Union winner hosts Central.

Scenario 3: If CAL wins and LexCath wins.
CAL hosts Russell. Hart/Union winner hosts LexCath.

Scenario 4: If CAL wins and Bell wins.
CAL hosts Russell, Bell hosts Union/Hart winner.

Not out of the realm of possibilities.

Bell County is playing really, really good football right now. In fact, with the way their defense has played and how their offense has found it's footing with a clock controlling run game as a surprisingly efficient pass game... I think they may be the only team I could see beating a CAL/Central on a neutral field.

With that said, look at that Bell County vs. Boyd County game that was at Bell earlier this year. Boyd was the only bonafide passing team Bell faced and the Lions gave them fits.

I think LexCath is definitely a decided underdog in this game and Log Mountain in November is a different world than Log Mountain in Summer, but if LexCath can successfully move the ball passing and Bell lays it on the ground a couple times this one could be interesting.
