The Time Is Now

 

The College Football Playoff rankings will be released this Tuesday at 7pm and the only thing that we know for sure is that the chaos is just beginning. 

 

First though, I want to give some love to the Louisville Cardinals football program.  

 

Not only did they dog walk Clemson this past Saturday.  They also secured their sixth win of the season as they are now bowl eligible.  

 

With their 33-21 defeat of Clemson they may have effectively eliminated Clemson from playoff contention as well as contention for the ACC title.  

 

Isaac Brown ran for 151 yards with a touchdown and quarterback Tyler Shough added a rushing touchdown of his own as Louisville defeated Clemson for the first time in program history. 

 

This win moved Louisville to #25 in the AP Rankings but they received no such love in the Coaches Poll.  

 

Either way, Louisville has solidified a successful season and with three games remaining on the schedule the opportunity for an 8-9 win season is absolutely on the table.

 

As for becoming bowl eligible things are looking tight for the UK Wildcats.   They took one on the chin to the UT Volunteers as they lost 28-18 and have an uphill battle to become bowl eligible.   

 

With remaining games against Murray State, Texas and Louisville they will need to find a way to win two of these games to become bowl eligible.  

 

Ohio State held off a feisty Penn State team and won 20-13 in Happy Valley this past weekend.  

 

Ohio State is rebounding from their loss to #1 Oregon. A looming game on November 23 against Indiana could very well determine Indiana’s playoff status despite their record.  

 

A lot of hard decisions will be made by the committee for the playoffs as there will be multiple 2 loss teams like Alabama who will get the playoff nod while others like Indiana and BYU will be the odd men out if they lose.  

 

Both Indiana and BYU are still undefeated and don’t carry the pedigree of a program like Alabama or LSU so if they lose even just one game they could be the odd man out.  

 

Teams with two losses like Alabama, LSU, Ole Miss and Texas A&M have a much better chance to make the playoffs than a team like Clemson who has two losses as well.  

 

As of this moment there aren’t any teams with two losses in the top ten but Alabama is sitting at #11 and if they have a playoff spot on Tuesday evening I will not be even slightly surprised.   

 

Oregon will likely be the number one team overall but humans could make Georgia number one even though Georgia has one loss.  

 

While Oregon has their signature win against Ohio State under their belt we have seen SEC bias prevalent throughout college football for as long as I have been alive.  

 

The SEC has been the pinnacle of college football so no one should be surprised if Georgia is named number one on Tuesday evening.  

 

These are the first 12 team playoffs being constructed so I expect a little more hype and fanfare than normal.  

 

When you look at the top 12 teams in the AP poll and the Coaches poll you can kind of get a feel for who will be where.  

 

The top five teams are identical in both polls but after that is where it gets hairy and if we had controversy picking four teams then we all know the controversy will be even larger with twelve teams in the running to make the playoffs.   

 

The AP poll shows more love to the programs like Indiana, BYU, Boise State and SMU while the Coaches poll shows more love to the SEC and Notre Dame.  

 

How this plays out on Tuesday remains to be seen. 

 

Rest assured that despite the other activity going on Tuesday night I will eagerly be awaiting the 7pm announcement of the first release of the College Football Playoff rankings.
