16th Region Week 8 Review

Featured Replies

Mother nature brings the region to its knees.... Vikings tame the Lions.... And the Devils sound the horn in Raceland....

Winter revealed its true colors last week, favoring a bright white hue. Snow blanketed the region, throwing the schedule into disarray.

Only two games on the books came off at all, but not without a hitch.

Lewis County traveled to Morehead to tangle with Rowan County in a game that had to be rescheduled. It played out about how most expected, with the Vikings sending the Lions home with a thirteen point loss. Rowan nearly placed four in double figures, led by Colby Wilburn's game high 15 points. Kyran Ferguson logged a double-double (11 & 12) for Lewis County.

Raceland entertained 63rd District rival Russell in another contest that had to be moved from its original slot. The Devils seized the lead at around the 3:00 mark of the first quarter and never relinquished it. The margin grew to thirteen in the final frame, but the Rams would not go quietly, pulling within one in the final minute before Russell sealed it at the free throw line. Raceland star Christian Large was reportedly under the weather and could only muster seven points, well below his near 20 ppg average.

Highlights:

The outcome typifies the recent history of the district; No one has been good enough to run away with it in years. Any of the four teams, also including Greenup and Lewis, could defeat the others on a given night or get hot at the right time and cut down the nets, regardless of seeding.

Just as important as the two games played, was one in particular that wasn't.

Of the many that were canceled, Ashland and Fleming County stood out. The weather robbed us of that marquee game between the five year region kingpin and a would-be contender with a combination of experience, shooting, guard play, and coaching pedigree to pose problems for the Tomcats and Boyd County. We can only hope it finds its way back on the schedule at a later date.
