Barren County 56 Metcalfe County 54 (4th Region Quarterfinals)

Featured Replies

I don’t think Barren had the lead until the final shot. Could be wrong but they trailed a majority of the game.

Good showing by the Hornets. Small school that always battles in every sport.

Barren County did lead early, at 6-3.  Metcalfe County went on a 12-0 run to seize command, and held Barren at arm's length the majority of the game. I believe lead got as large as 12 points, but Trojans had cut that to 5 at the half, and down to two by the end of the third.  But they couldn't get the game tied, missing multiple opportunities, including some at the line.  Metcalfe County lead by five at 54-49 with 2:04 left, but they would not score again.  Beckham hit a three for Barren twenty seconds later, and I feel like that was when Metcalfe finally cracked.  The Trojans came out of a timeout in a full court press, and Blythe went up the floor very quickly, missing a driving layup.  The Hornets got the rebound, but instead of pulling it back out went up again, leaving it short.  This time Barren County rebounded, and they hit Spillman on a runout in transition and finally Barren had tied it.  Ina span of roughly 15 seconds Barren had finally climbed the hill.  Metcalfe County again came down fast, drawing a foul, but then turned it over when inbounding from the baseline, throwing it into their own bench.  The Trojans missed a shot from the wing 20 seconds later (when they should have been holding for the last shot), but got a mulligan when the Hornets turned it over on a back tap when trying to get up the floor after rebounding.  This time the Trojans called timeout and held for a (presumptive) final shot, and Bewley hit a shot that rolled around the rim and in with 2.4 seconds remaining.  Jax Allen got a heave from halfcourt for the win, but it was off to the left, hitting the backboard.

The Hornets did all they could but win the game.  Wyatt Blythe's last game as a Hornet was a great one - he scored 25 points to lead all scorers.  Eli Brooks led Barren County with 15 points.  Barren County was frankly dreadful for a huge stretch of the game.  They were terrible from the foul line, going just 8/15 there.  And they really didn't shoot well for huge stretches of the game.  Repeats of that on Monday will mean a huge BG win.
