Ohio County moves to the top spot this week after a somewhat convincing win in the Owensboro Sportscenter last Tuesday.  The Eagles have now won 7 of their last 8 games and have moved themselves into the role of regional favorite for the time being.  They do have a late season game against Owensboro, on Valentines Day.  It still looks to be a 3 team race for the regional title.

1.Ohio County Eagles (17-4) – UP 1

Wins – Owensboro Catholic & Mclean County

It was a huge week for the Eagles.  They opened with a convincing 12 point win against Owensboro Catholic.  They jumped out early and never looked back.  Parker Culbertson was smooth as silk from the field, scoring 27.  On Friday, they became the 1st team to punch their ticket to the 3rd Region Tournament, as they knocked off Mclean County.  This makes them 4-0 in district play and gives them the #1 seed.  Elijah Decker scored 14 to lead the Eagles.  They have 3 home games this week against Bowling Green, Hancock County and Calloway County.

2.Owensboro Catholic Aces (17-2) – DOWN 1

Wins – Apollo, Losses - Ohio County

The Aces ran into a buzzsaw last Tuesday night in the form of the Ohio County Eagles.  From the outset, it looked like Ohio County were out to make a statement that they were the best team in the region.  Catholic made a late push but it was not enough, as they fell 76-64.  The Aces bounced back with a district win in a huge second half effort against Apollo.  Parker Gray led the way with 15.  They have Grayson County tonight and open the All-A State Tournament against Cumberland County on Thursday.

3.Owensboro Red Devils (11-6) – SAME

Losses – Evansville Bosse

The Devils put an end to their 3 game losing streak, with a track meet win over Bosse 94-92.  AP Mitchell led the way with 36 points.  Mitchell is starting to become a force for Coach Drake in the paint.  He has a division 1 level frame and as he gets more experience under his belt, you can expect him to be a big difference maker in the post season.  The Devils have road games at Madisonville, Daviess County and Hopkinsville this week.

4.Mclean County Cougars (14-6) - SAME

Wins – Edmonson County, Losses - Ohio County

The Cougars fought for a double overtime win against Edmonson County to open the week.  The team trailed by 1 late in the double overtime before Cruz Lee hit the game winning 3 pointer.  Gunnar Revelett led the team with 18.  On Friday, they led late against Ohio County and had 2 free throws to make it a 3 point game with under 20 seconds to play.  Unfortunately, they missed the front end of a one in one and could not hold off the Eagles.  Revelett again led the way, with 17.  They are at Muhlenberg County on Friday.

5.Edmonson County Wildcats (11-8) – UP 2

Wins – Butler County, Losses – Mclean County

The Wildcats have now won 5 of their last 7 games, with one of those losses coming to Mclean County on a buzzer beater in double overtime.  They got a big district win over Butler County on Friday.  The Cats placed 4 players in double figures in a balanced effort.  Braden Wall had a double double with 14 points and 11 rebounds.  They are at Todd Central tonight and host Grayson County on Friday.

6.Hancock County Hornets (11-8) – UP 2

Wins – Whitesville Trinity & Meade County

It was a good news bad news week for the Hornets.  They scored impressive back to back wins over Whitesville Trinity and then a district win against Meade on Friday.  Against the Raiders, Devin Powers led the way with 18 while Kaleb Keown recorded a double double with 17 points and 11 boards.  Keown kept it going against the Waves, scoring 27.  The Hornets look to keep the momentum alive this week as they travel to Ohio County on Friday.

7.Butler County Bears (12-7) – SAME

Wins – Green County, Losses - Edmonson

The Bears continue to be inconsistent in the results this season.  Ty Price and Lawson Rice both had big weeks again, but the Bears dropped another district game to Edmonson on Friday.  Price is up to 30 points per game, while Rice is sitting at 19 points and 11 rebounds per contest, but the Bears have to start finding ways to be more consistent down the stretch if they want to reach their potential.  They have Allen County, Muhlenberg County and Whitesville Trinity this week.

8.Whitesville Trinity Raiders (9-6) – DOWN 3

Wins –Cloverport, Losses – Hancock County, Grayson County and Hopkins County Central

It was a tough week for the Raiders, dropping 3 of 4 games.  While they opened the season with 6 seniors, they have been battling injuries lately and that has shortened the bench for Coach West.  They will look to bounce back this week with games against Meade County and Butler County this week.

9.Daviess County Panthers (8-10) – SAME

Wins – Meade County & Warren East, Losses - Henderson County

The Panthers have now won 4 of their last 5 and will hopefully get some guys back in the lineup soon.  No one has competed as hard as Daviess County this year.  Even in games where they have been under maned they continue to battle.  Gage Phelps has upped his season average to right at 19 points per game to lead the Panthers.  They have the Bluegrass Blazers, Owensboro and Webster County this week.

10.Grayson County Cougars (7-12) – UP 1

Wins - Whitesville Trinity

The Cougars bounced back with a nice 13 point home win over Whitesville Trinity this week.  Jack Logsdon led the way with 15.  Its a tough week for the Cougars as they ahve Owensboro Catholic tonight, Apollo tomorrow and a district game against Edmonson on Friday.

11.Breckinridge County Tigers (7-11) – DOWN 1

Wins - Apollo, Losses – Central Hardin

The Tigers opened the week with a nice 14 point win over Apollo.  Hunter Barr had a double double with 15 points and 11 boards.  They dropped a game to Central Hardin on Friday.  They have Cloverport, Meade and Muhlenberg this week.

12.Muhlenberg County Mustangs (4-15) – SAME

Losses – Bowling Green & Mayfield

The Mustangs continue to play a gauntlet schedule and while they look to be improving, its hard to see it in the results.  Kanyon Johnson has came on strong as of late, as he scored 21 in both losses last week.  The Mustangs have Butler County & Mclean County this week.

13.Meade County Greenwave (4-12) – SAME

Losses – Daviess County and Hancock County

The Waves dropped a pair of games this week.  Peyton Johnson leads the way with 13 points per game on the season.  The Waves have Hart, Whitesville Trinity and Breck County this week.

14.Apollo Eagles (3-15) - SAME

Losses – Breck County and Owensboro Catholic

Right now, Apollo just isn't deep enough to compete consistently. The Eagles have games against Grayson County, Trigg County and Allen County this week.

15.Cloverport Aces (3-16) – SAME

Wins – Whitesville Trinity & Dawson Springs

The Aces have games against Breck County and Brown this week.

Looks like a great game to me!  Would love to go, but too many irons in the fire for that unfortunately.

I wish I had seen this earlier!  I would have expected a toss up.  Ohio County is a real strong team in our region due to the physicality and ability to play position less basketball most of the time.  It makes them a matchup problem inside the 3rd.  Outside the 3rd, I am not sure they do that as much, especially to a team like Bowling Green.  When it comes to our region you have them, Tim Riley's Aces and Owensboro.  The Aces are so well coached and play with a ton of heart, so they are a tough game for just about anyone.  Owensboro is the team that I think has the highest ceiling.  It just seems like they struggle to get the right lineup on the floor at times.  The Devils "Basketball Bennie" lineup is Carbon, Moss, Webb, AP and Ethan Pendleton.  If they make that their primary lineup and use the other kids in spot duty, lookout.

Great stuff 98!  Looking forward to seeing how the BG vs O game goes in a little bit.  Should be a good game as always.  Tim Riley just is a Super Coach!  The Aces beat BG earlier in the season and know they are tough to beat.
