BluegrassPreps.com 14th Region Week 1 Review

Featured Replies

We are officially in basketball season with a week behind us. We've had several surprises thus far in the 14th Region.

1) Breathitt County: (1-0): The 14th region crown has eluded the Breathitt Bobcats. No matter how good the teams Breathitt County has fielded, the 14th region crown has been out of their reach. With a new man at the helm and another talented team, can this finally be the year the Bobcats cut down the nets? They certainly got off to a good start.

After a close back and forth battle, Breathitt County was able to get past Lee County 73-54. Schedule doesn't get any easier as they will open up the WYMT Mountain Classic with Martin County who just completely thrashed Cordia 84-15.

2) Perry County Central: (2-1): The defending 14th region champions, can they make it a repeat? They got off to a 2-1 start this past week. Falling to Harlan County but picking up wins over Leslie County 80-48 and Magoffin County 80-63. Commodores don't have an easy task ahead this week with undefeated Betsy Layne in the WYMT Classic. Betsy Layne has won all of their games by double digits.

3) Hazard: (3-0): Big Al has his Bulldogs off to a fantastic start, winning all three games to open up the season. Winning all three games by 29+ points. Defeating Paris 74-46, Powell County 71-36, Whitley County 71-42.  Much like the top two teams, the schedule for this week won't be any easier as the Bulldogs will tip it up with Harlan Green Dragons in the WYMT Mountain Classic. Both teams come into the contest undefeated.

4) Letcher County Central: (2-3): The Cougars played 5 games with just 1 day off in between plus made the long trip down from the Mountains to Lexington where they took on Frederick Douglass and Bryan Station on back to back nights. Cougars opened up the season with a 84-63 loss to Pikeville but would bounce back and win they're next two games defeating Phelps 90-68 and Lee VA 87-51. This is when the Cougars would make the long trip down from the Mountains to Lexington where they would take on both Frederick Douglass and Bryan Station. Both would be losses for the Cougars as they would fall to Frederick Douglass 83-69 and Bryan Station 85-68. Letcher County Central will host Twin Springs VA this week.

5) Wolfe County: (1-2): Wolfe County picked up a big win thrashing Jackson City 87-34 but would fall in they're next two games losing 74-61 to Scott County and 75=58 to Whitley County in DJ Begley Classic at Hazard. Wolfe County will host Cordia and travel to Estill County this week. Can they regroup or will L's continue to stock pile up?

6) Estill County: (0-1): The Engineers took one on the chin when they fell to Sayre 73-47. Schedule doesn't get any easier this week with Wolfe County and Owsley County both lurking.

7) Lee County: (1-1): The Bobcats surprised folks this past week when they defeated Knott County Central 77-73 and gave the #1 Breathitt Bobcats all they wanted for a half before eventually falling 73-54. Three big games for the Bobcats this week. At Jackson County, at home vs. Jackson City and at Buckhorn.

8 ) Buckhorn: (2-0): Buckhron is off to a great start picking up two solid wins defeating Red Bird 73-46 and Onedia Baptist Institute 99-75 in the PRTC Classic at Jackson County. The Wildcats will be home all this week hosting both Cordia and Lee County. Can they remain undefeated or will someone hand them they're first loss on the season.

9) Knott County Central: (1-1): The Patriots have a new look this season and so far it's not a good look. The Patriots opened up the season falling on the road to Lee County 77-73. However, the Patriots would bounce back and defeat Barbourville 62-45 in the DJ Begley Classic at Hazard. Patriots have a long road ahead this week as they take on the Black Bears of Harlan County in the WYMT Mountain Classic.

10) Leslie County: (0-3): The Eagles have not had the start they've wanted. Getting blown out in they're first three games of the season. Have yet to even score 50 points in a game. I'm sure Coach Noble is hoping for a big turn around this week as they host both Jenkins and Wellspring Gaurdians Home school.

11) Powell County: (1-2): The Pirates opened up the season with a 73-55 over Menifee County but would fall in they're next two games losing 71-36 to Hazard and 59-55 to Montgomery County. Pirates will be on road this week at Burgin and Paris.

12) Owsley County: (2-1): Owsley County opened up the season with two wins defeating OBI 70-52 and Ligon Home School 78-46 but would fall to Jackson County 74-55. Owsley will host Pineville before going to Whitley County this week.

13) Jackson City: (1-2): Dropped two of their first three games, losing 87-34 to Wolfe County, 83-82 to Jenkins in Overtime. Tigers did beat Ligon Home School 76-44 to begin the season.

14) Cordia: (0-3): The Lions are an old shell of they're former selves. Cordia has taken beatings this season. Losing all three games by right around 50 points each. Two of the three games they haven't scored 23 points in either of those two games.
