Title IX

Featured Replies

I am not sure if this is really controversial but I wasn’t sure where else to put it. I searched online but cannot really find a direct answer to the question. I know the title nine says that there must be equal opportunities between males and females including participation and equipment etc. The rules say that donors or boosters may not provide extra for a team either unless the school makes up for the discrepancy. My question is what if the team fundraises on their own to buy additional equipment or have additional practice time or whatever.  Would that still be a violation if they did not share their proceeds with the opposite sex or other sports?

Maybe so, depending on what is supplied. If they are just buying basic team needs probably not, but if it were to be a major purchase then in all likelihood it would at the least have to be shared.

Years ago the baseball boosters at a local school raised money to build indoor batting cages and practice area. As soon as it was complete the school forced baseball to share facility 50/50 with softball. A friend at the time was a baseball parent and she lost her mind over this. It seemed they had approached softball parents to help with the process and few if any did. Baseball boosters were furious but the school stepped in and told them due to Title IX either they would both share is equally or no one could use it.

If they really didn’t help fundraise that is a bunch of crap.  The more I read up on this the more ridiculous some of it seems.  Well intentioned for sure but why can’t kids/parents work hard for nice things without always having to share.  And fwiw I have girls.
