Middle School Signing Day?

I noticed that a local high school coach had a signing day where each 8th grade football player, "Signed" a commitment letter to play for the high school. I'm sure that the purpose is to create extra excitement for the outgoing 8th graders/incoming 9th graders. They tweeted out photos of the coach and each player sitting at a desk with their signed "LOI."

Is this a new thing/trend?

Are other schools doing this too?

In a town like Somerset with three high schools all relatively close, all relatively successful, I could also see it being used as another tool to try to keep yours.
