Minnesota State, who entered the game on an 18 game winning streak, lead 1-0 after 2 periods and were poised to win their first ever NCAA Championship. However, Denver tied the game a little less than 5 minutes into the third and took the lead 3 minutes later. The Pioneer's went up 3-1 with a little over 6 minutes left in the game and added 2 empty net goals to win their 9th title.

Final score not really indicative of the quality of the game. Minnesota State seemed in control for two periods before Denver struck. When Denver did strike, it happened quick. Pioneers won their ninth title, tied with Michigan for most in NCAA history.
