Scientists are seeing a dangerous shift in early-spring tornadoes

Featured Replies

This month has seen more tornadoes in the US than any March on record following this week’s severe weather outbreak.

It’s the second year in a row the country has endured a record number of tornadoes in March, solidifying a trend toward more severe weather earlier in the year and raising questions among scientists, who’ve historically seen such weather peak from April to early June.

Meanwhile, more severe storms happening further east in the country could mean more disastrous and deadly tornado outbreaks are possible.

La Niña and the ongoing drought in the south and portions of the midwest. La Niña causes frequent cold fronts from Canada toward the south-central United States. A ridge in the northwest causes these fronts to move southeasterly across the country. Then we see moist air coming up from the Gulf these two can produce a lot of energy to fuel storms. This along with wind energy will cause storms to become severe and tornadic. Remember I posted before the spring severe season started that I thought we could be looking at above-normal severe weather this year. It was this same pattern that caused the tornado outbreaks in December and January. I'm seeing signs of an uptick in possible severe storms for Kentucky in April but May may be even worse.

If memory serves me correctly 1974 and 2011 were La Niña years.
