BGP Severe Weather Alert Day (3/18/2022)

Featured Replies

A Severe Weather Alert Day has been issued for today. Conditions are forecast to become favorable later today for the formation of supercell thunderstorms with isolated large hail. A few could produce hail of 2 inches in diameter or larger. A wind damage threat could also develop along with tornadoes with the stronger supercells. The area with the greatest threat for very large hail will be from southeast Missouri northeastward across western Kentucky into far southern Indiana. The Storm Prediction Center has a large section of Kentucky under a Slight Risk Area for scattered strong to severe storms.

The HRRR radar shows the storms starting to form in southeast Missouri and northwestern Tennessee around 4 pm EST. They will move in a northeasterly direction into western Kentucky around 6 pm EST.

The NAM shows the conditions could become favorable for severe storm development and the possibility of significant tornadic activity.

This map is something I drew up where my thinking is the best chance to see possible tornadoes. It is not exact and tornadoes could form anywhere in the Slight Risk Area with the stronger supercells.

I will be monitoring this situation throughout the day and post updates when possible. Also, send out any pertinent information via our Twitter page.

A line of severe thunderstorms moved through the region on Friday evening, 3/18/2022.  As of Saturday morning, 3/19/2022, these are the areas that we plan on survey for storm damage.  These locations will likely be surveyed today and possibly Sunday and Monday.  Additional surveys in other areas may be planned later this weekend.  Stay tuned to this page for later updates.

For the first time in quite a while we were under Tornado Warnings in Jefferson County last night. May have had a quick touchdown in extreme SW Jefferson County. Other than that, just really high winds as it moved through.

That would be no. 2 on the map from the National Weather Service.
