Coach Mark White was let go as basketball coach by WCHS at the very beginning of the season, while remaining on as a teacher. The day after being fired as head coach, White told the Corbin News Journal that he was told the school "just didn't like the direction of the program," despite his 2-0 start to the season.

White took over the program in May 2020 after Jerry Overbey retired in March of that year following 9 seasons as the Colonels' head basketball coach. Overbey's final team, consisting of 8 freshman and 6 sophomores and 0 upperclassmen on the roster, was 12-19 in the 2019-20 season. The following season, White's first as head coach, went 4-16 and had six 8th graders, 1 freshman, 7 sophomores, and 1 junior on the roster.

Assistant Coach Austin Horn took over the team as interim head coach in December and led the Colonels to a 13-16 season, ending their season with a 5 point loss to Corbin in the first round of the 50th District Tournament.

This job will always be a tough gig with South Laurel and Corbin in the district.
