Middle to High School Eligibility

Featured Replies

I am trying to understand the High School Football Eligibility rules.

I understand that a player can only play 4 years at Varsity level but do any of the new change of residence rules effect Football. For example a player plays up in Middle School (Freshman and JV Football) and then decides to go to a different High School, can they play right away?

From what I got reading the KHSAA's website it shouldn't affect their eligibility. As long as the games were JV or Freshman (since 8th grade and below can't play varsity anyway) they should be able to transfer and still play.

I think the rule has been changed on that. You can no longer play High School Football (etc. Freshman, JV, or Varsity) while you are still in grade school. It changed several years ago right after Dennis Johnson for H-burg had been playing for years and years. Some said he played while he was in 5th grade. I believe that's the ruling now...........Maybe a Coach will help us out here??

I thought that was the case as well but the wording on the KHSAA website makes it seem as though it is okay for middle schoolers to play freshman or jv. It says that a student in grades 1-8 may not play or practice on a varsity football or soccer team. It also says that they can only practice or play on a non-varsity (freshman/JV) team if no members of the team that they represent or play against is above grade 10.
