Who:  Oldham County Lady Colonels vs. Eminence Lady Warriors

When:  Thursday, 2/25/21

Where:  Oldham County HS

The Oldham County Lady Colonels (3-5 as of this writing) face off against the Eminence Lady Warriors (12-4 as of this writing) on Thursday on Senior Night at Oldham County HS.

The incredibly young Warriors have just one senior on their roster, no juniors, and no sophomores.    The roster shows 5 freshmen, 5 eighth graders, and 1 seventh grader, but this team has measured up well against all but the elite teams in the region, going 7-4 in region 8 play and 12-4 overall.  The Warriors are led by freshman Jada Hughes (18.3 ppg) and 7th grader Ashlinn James (14.1 ppg).

Oldham County, which saw four of its starters graduate from a 19-win team last season that made it to the 8th Region tournament, is trying to rebuild behind guard Kayley Batts (13.8 ppg) and post player Reagan Cheatham (10.6 ppg / 8.1 rebounds).

In girls?   Not sure.   Back when Eminence had some really nice teams in the late 80s, with Chrissy Roberts, Oldham was in the middle of their heydey, a stretch where the Lady Colonels won 14 of 21 8th Region crowns.    So....not a great matchup for Eminence, even when they were good.

I don't think Eminence's girls have beaten Oldham since before 2000 at the very least....

On the boys' side, definitely.   In the 1970s, Eminence's boys were one of the region elites.

Eminence will be a legitimate threat to beat Oldham tomorrow night; the Lady Warriors are very young, but talented.   Oldham is struggling with players who are out, and the Lady Colonels only last week came back from a long quarantine.

Did additional research....

LAST YEAR:   Oldham County defeated Eminence, 62-22 on 12/7/2019.   Most of the OC team that romped in that game is gone; Reagan Cheatham scored 8 points and grabbed 8 rebounds; no other current Lady Colonel scored more than 2 points in that game.

Prior  to last season, the Lady Colonels and Lady Warriors have not met since sometime before the 1998-99 season....

Who knows what the game may bring tonight, but I'm going to enjoy broadcasting it with one of my two sons.

Shaun, my youngest (22), will be handling color commentary tonight for Pegasus Sports.   Shaun's a veteran cameraman and handles the training of my current crop of new HS cameramen (and women), but he's also a very knowledgeable announcer.   Still getting his chops wet as an announcer, but he's doing well...

It's always fun to work with your son(s).....

Oldham fell behind by 13 again in the third, but a furious rally (fueled in a large part by 5 third quarter steals by Sydney Cheatham) pulls the Lady Colonels to within 47-44 after three complete.

Jada Hughes picked up her fourth foul in the third and went to the bench with an apparent left shoulder (shooting shoulder) injury.
