10th Region Boys Basketball Week 5 Review

Featured Replies

Our number one becomes the last team in the tenth to lose their first game, but don't worry - they're still at the top of the heap - but our number 2 has them in their sights.

For the first time, the weekly report includes region and district W-L records.  Also appearing are the latest RPI numbers; giving you, constant reader, the opportunity to see just how far out of line your intrepid reporter's rankings diverge from the stats.

1).  Clark County (11-1, 7-0 region, 4-0 district, .664 RPI). 75-80 L at East Jessamine, 83-41 W vs. Paris, 78-51 W at Bracken County.

Previous rank - 1

This week - at Frederick Douglass, vs. Bryan Station, vs. Pikeville.

The region's top-ranked squad suffered its first defeat of the season, on the road at a solid East Jessamine five; their first road game without leading scorer Jerone Morton.  PG Aden Slone paced the Cards with26, while Trent Edwards and Jared Wellman had 14 and 13.  Paris and Bracken County didn't prove to be nearly as formidable.  Wellman had 25 and 15 and Edwards had 12 and 13 in the Paris game.

2).  Montgomery County (7-2, 5-1 region, 2-1 district, .634 RPI). 75-64 W vs. Lexington Christian, 63-51 W vs. Harrison County.

Previous rank - 2

This week - vs. Woodford County, at Bourbon County, at Fleming County.

The Indians cruised in both contests last week.  Hagan Harrison poured in 30 against LCA, while Rickey Lovette notched yet another double-double (15 and 10).  Harrison did one better against the 'Breds, scoring 31, while Lovette had 15 and 14.  Lovette averages an even 18 and 12 for the season.  MoCo is riding a nice little five game winning streak and hasn't dropped a game since January 23.

3).  Scott (6-4, 1-0 region, 1-0 district, .599 RPI) -  47-68 L vs. Conner, 78-57 W vs. Boone County, 57-54 W vs. Simon Kenton.

Previous rank - 4

This week - at Ryle, vs. Calvary Christian, at Bishop Brossart.

Scott kept it close against Conner, but were outscored 27-11 in the final quarter; with Grant Proffitt scoring 20 and Cameron Peterson 17.  Five Eagles reached double figures in the Boon County contest, headed by Peterson's 18-11 double-double.  SImon Kenton proved to be a tougher opponent, with Brayden Howell scoring a team-high 18.  Scott ventures back into the district (and the region) this week.

4).  Mason County (9-3, 3-2 region, 1-0 district, .619 RPI) - 76-57 W vs. Ryle, 93-74 W at Fleming County, 60-49 W vs. Elliott County.

Previous rank - 5

This week - vs. Bishop Brossart, vs. Bracken County.

Terrell Henry with 24 and 9 vs. Ryle; and 26/13 after the team's so-so first half at Fleming County.  Philip Bierly led the Royals with 17 on a perfect scoring night (6-6 FG and 5-5 FT), with the team going 13-15 from the charity stripe.  Mason County made easy work of Augusta a couple of weeks ago; I look for Bracken to show a little better on the 13th.

5).  Campbell County (8-3, 6-2 region, 2-1 district, .599 RPI) - 79-64 W vs. Simon Kenton, 63-30 W vs. Bracken County, 84-60 W vs. Robertson County

Previous rank - 6

This week - vs. Highlands, at Bracken County, at Ryle, at Boone Cousnty.

Eric Davie led four scorers in double figures against Simon Kenton with 19.  The bench was a lot of action in the Bracken County game, as eleven players scored and an even dozen grabbed at least one rebound.

The much-awaited tilt with Robertson County happened, but not as expected.  The Camels made easy work of the shorthanded Devils, with Garrett Beiting erupting for 29 points, while Dane Hegyi and Eric Davie had double-doubles.  Campbell only attempted a handful of free throws and still won by 24.  Tuesday's game against Highlands could be a good one.

6).  Robertson County (7-3, 4-2 region, 0-1 district, .542 RPI) - 87-36 W vs. St. Patrick, 57-58 L vs. Harrison County, 60-84 L at Campbell County.

Previous rank - 3

This week - No games schedule (not COVID, just a ten day break).

As expected, Robertson made short work of the Saints in a 51-point win, but district foe Harrison County turned the tables in a thriller at Mt. Olivet.  Justin Becker's last second floater missed the mark and the Devils lost their first district game.  Point guard Sebastian Dixon - second-leading scorer and third-leading rebounder - missed the game.  Coach Kelsch's charges were even more undermanned the next night in Alexandria, with regional POY candidate Becker out along with Dixon.  Brandon Dice led the way scoring 21 and Tanner Horn chipping in 16.  The ten day hiatus may be just what the doctor ordered.

7). Harrison County (6-6, 3-4 region, 1-1 district, .497 RPI) - 53-55 L vs. Pendleton County, 58-57 W at Robertson County, 51-63 L at Montgomery County.

Previous rank - 9

This week - at Paris, at Bourbon County

A topsy-turvy week for the Breds, dropping a nail-biter at home to district foe Pendleton County, upsetting Robertson County, then showing well but ultimately falling in Mt. Sterling to Montgomery.  Freshman Kaydon Custard is coming into his own, while James Soard led the Breds in scoring in the first two games last week with 26 and 19.

8).  Bishop Brossart (5-5, 3-2 region, 0-1 district, .493 RPI) - Last week - L 50-60 to Newport Central Catholic, W 65-35 at Villa Madonna.

Previous rank - 7

This week - at Mason County, vs. Bellevue, vs. Scott.

Steven Verst led the shorthanded (Govan is out, Sepate is out, and a bunch of sophs are filling in) Mustangs against NewCath, and was the only double-digit scorer with 14.  Carson Schirmer isn't at a hundred percent yet, but made his season debut against Villa and had 19 points to go along with Verst's 25.

9). Bourbon County (2-5, 2-2 region, 0-2 district, .491 RPI) - no games (COVOD) last week.

Previous rank - 8

This week - Pendleton County, Montgomery County, Harrison County.

The Colonels are finally slated to reset this week, with a trio of home games.  They haven't played since January 22.  We will see how long it takes to knock off the rust.

10A).  Augusta (7-3, 4-2 region, 3-1 district, .546 RPI) - 70-48 W at Paris, 79-80 L vs. Ryle.

Previous rank - 10

This week - at Lewis County, vs. Nicholas County, at Pendleton County.

The Hinson brothers scored 23 and 11 against Paris; then there was what turned out to be the region's thriller of the week (along with Harrison-Robertson).  The Panthers led Ryle by 12 with less than a minute to play, only to surrender the lead and ultimately fall in overtime.  Kayson Hinson and Riley Mastin had career games with 37/6 and 25/10 in the heartbreaking loss.  The game scheduled with Cooper the next day was cancelled.

10B).  Bracken County (5-9, 2-7 region, 0-2 district, .458 RPI) - 66-57 W at Ryle, 30-63 L at Campbell County, 51-78 L to Clark County.

Previous rank - 11

This week - vs. Madison Central, vs. Campbell County, at Mason County.

The Polar Bears started out with a nice win at Ryle, with Garrett Reynolds going 6-7 from distance and leading the team with 19 points.  Campbell County's suffocating defense held Bracken to 28% shooting - including 1-18 from behind the arc, as Cayden Reed was the only man in double figures with 10.  Three bears reached double figures against Clark County, with the younger Reed brother leading the way with 15.

12).  Pendleton County (5-3, 2-2 region, 2-0 district, .482 RPI) - 55-53 W at Harrison County, 47-45 W vs. Nicholas County, 60-55 W vs. Lloyd Memorial.

Previous rank - 12

This week - at Bourbon County, vs. Paris, vs. Augusta, at Mason County.

Pendleton swept a trio of tight games last week.  First was a squeaker over district for Harrison County with Noah Barnard hitting the late game-winner.  Jacob Redden and Tredyn Thomas led the Cats is scoring with 15 and 11.  Thomas recorded the game-winner against Nicholas County with 15 seconds to play.  I'm still not completely sold, but a couple of wins this week will move Pendleton up in the rankings.

13).  Calvary Christian (6-4, 1-2 region, 0-1 district, .487 RPI) - No games last week.

Previous rank - 13

This week - at Villa Madonna, at Scott, at Portland Christian, at Whitefield Academy.

The Cougars become road warriors this week, with each of their four games away from home.

14). Paris (1-7, 0-5 region, 0-3 district) - 48-70 loss to Augusta, 41-83 loss at Clark County, 68-84 loss to Frankfort.

Previous rank - 14

This week - vs. Harrison County, at Pendleton County, vs. Western Hills.

The rebuilding Greyhounds had a rough week, and missing a half dozen scheduled games to COVID hasn't helped their development (and one of the toughest schedules in the region hasn't helped the W-L record).  Jakari Ransom had a nice 21-point effort against Augusta; Ricquiece Washington had 19 in the loss to GRC and 25 against Frankfort.

15).  Nicholas County (3-9, 0-5 region, 0-3 district, .378 RPI) - 70-43 W vs. Menifee County, 45-47 loss at Pendleton County, 93-72 W vs. Rose Hill Christian.

Previous rank - 15

This week - Feb. 1 vs. Menifee County; Feb. 5 at Pendleton County; Feb. 6 vs. Rose Hill

Dalton Davenport and Brady Switzer had 25 and 17 in the lopsided win over Menifee.  Scoring wasn't as easy to come by in Falmouth, as Nicholas ultimately fell in a game in which they led most of the way.  Wyatt Clark led a quartet of Blue Devils in double figures with 22 in the win over Rose Hill.

16).  St. Patrick (1-13, 0-6 region, 0-1 district, .297 RPI) - 36-87 L at Robertson County, 33-50 L at Dayton.

Previous rank - 16

This week - at Heritage Academy, vs. Elliott County, vs. Villa Madonna.

Chase Walton with 16/13 and 16/16 in the two losses last week.

Nice summary, O Decrepit One.

You’re being too kind.

Completely out out of character.
