WHAT. A. GAME!!!

The now 7-2, much improved from last season, Dixie Heights Red Colonels played host to the visiting  8th Region Simon Kenton Pioneers, who came into this game with a 5-1 record, and wow what a game it was!!!

The Colonels jumped out early, taking a 16 point lead into halftime, setting a pace for what appeared to be the makings for a long night for the Pioneers, but Simon Kenton, led by the incredibly impressive Sr. Guard Kelly Niece had other things in mind, and spent the 2nd half diligently chipping away at the lead. 

By the end of the 3rd period they had cut it to 6 making way for an incredibly intense 4th quarter where with under a minute to play they finally cut it to 1. 

Then with 4 seconds on the clock, and the Pioneers down 3 with a chance to tie, they got called for 5 seconds on the inbound pass turning the ball over to Dixie. 

A quick foul put the Colonels at the line where they connected with both, stretching the margin to 5 points seeing them hold on for the certain win, but then Kelly Niece, to put an exclamation point on his stellar night where he tossed in a whole bunch, hit a half court shot at the buzzer making the final score 77-75. 

Both teams showed amazing toughness; the Pioneers for making a game of it, and the Colonels for staying the course in the face of their opponent who wasn’t about to go away. 

Sure, the headline for this game is, and deservedly so, “The Dixie Heights Red Colonels hang on to get the big win over visiting Pioneers of Simon Kenton 77-75”, but wow did Kelly Niece sure put his hat in the ring for a little bit of that spotlight where it could easily read, “Despite Kelly Niece’s career night, The Dixie Heights Red Colonels hang on to get the big win over visiting, never say die Pioneers of Simon Kenton 77-75”.

I can’t wait to see what Kelly Niece's total points on the night were.
