Off Season Training Programs

Featured Replies

I am interested to hear the different ways programs around the state conduct their off season training programs. A few questions I have are below; anything you all can provide would be helpful! Thanks.

1. When do you traditionally start organized training?

2. Who runs your training program? Do you have a strength training coach? Do you hire it out to a third party? (If a 3rd party, what do you and your other staff members do during this time?)

3. Who is expected to be at your training sessions? Are athletes who participate in other sports still expected to be there at certain times?

4. What time of the day do you have your training? Are their options for players?

5. How do you try to address nutrition? We all know how important this is

1. When I was in school, we started weights/conditioning in February/March 3 times a week.

2. One of our coaches ran it. He was a beast, got us right.

3. All athletes who didn't do winter sports or spring were expected to be there if they wanted to be considered for starting positions/playing time. So as not to burn out. If a kid did winter sport, but no spring sport, coach wanted them to take 2 weeks off in between sports, to let them be a kid. I respected and appreciated that looking back.

4. It was right after school, 3:30-4:30. M/W/Th

5. Nutrition was talked about and suggested, but many of the students in my school weren't in family that coukd afford the most nutritional food with their families, so it was eat what you can to survive.

1. When I played, we started the second week of January. 4 days a week.

2. All of the normal coaches are there and they all did different things.  One did speed bags, one did stadiums, one did weight room etc.

3. Everyone is expected besides winter sport athletes, baseball only came 2 days a week.

4. Right after school for 2.5 hours, just like normal practice. M T W TH, 3:15-5:45

5. Nutrition was talked about when I was there, but now free food is given to the players.  I personally was told “gain 20 pounds and you’ll play” before the offseason training of my sophomore year.

This sounds very similar to what I did when I played; only difference was that ours was Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. I have noticed on social media a good amount of schools who have started doing things in the morning and I am curious how the logistics of that work.

If you can’t get “in school” weights then the next best thing is weights before school. It helps with school attendance. The players typically will be nice and awake with some energy in the morning. Let’s everyone be free after school and there are less conflicts. It’s just getting your school on board with it.

I’m not sure, my school never made the effort to switch it to mornings.  I know the swim team did stuff before school though.
