The Pirates stagger in fresh off a heartbreaking 20-14 loss to rival Pikeville. The Panthers were able to stifle Belfry's offense and keep them out of the endzone after Belfry scored an early 14 points, including turning Belfry away on 4th Down deep in opposing territory twice on long time consuming drives. As the Pirates begin District play it is clear what needs to be worked on. Belfry is struggling to establish an interior run game outside of Isaac Dixon and on Defense the Pirates simply are struggling to shed blocks at the LB and Interior DL position with Seth Mounts currently injured.

Magoffin County enters 2-0 and fresh off a surprising 56-8 bludgeoning of Martin County, a 64-point swing from when the Cardinals defeated them 22-8 a year ago. QB Lucas Litteral has been outstanding through two games, posting 498 passing yards and 7 TD's. The Hornets are clearly eying improving their standing in the District race and would love nothing more to catch Belfry sleeping in the hangover of the Pikeville loss.

Litteral's giving me Michael Caba vibes so far. Those were some fun years in Salyersville.

Belfry might be inching its way back to earth from their peak years, but they've still got more than enough in the tank to handle Magoffin. If the Hornets had McDuffus back, it might be more competitive, but alas...

Didn't they have a Barnett kid who was his primary receiver back then?

There is also an Aden Barnett who is playing well at receiver this year. Wonder if there is a relation there.

Magoffin also lost Mason Lovely who was a tackling machine to Paintsville, where he has continued to remain a tackling machine.

Martin County actually returned most of their offensive firepower from a 7-4 team in 2019. That Magoffin score actually opened my eyes a bit. With Lawrence County's battle with COVID, and Pike Central's sketchy start, the 2-0 start by Magoffin and Floyd Central certainly raises eyebrows that maybe there may be so new blood hosting a playoff game.
