Last month Ohio voted to expand their football playoffs from eight to twelve schools per region, starting in 2021. During the first round of the playoffs, the top four seeds will have a bye, while the No. 12 seed will play at the No. 5 seed, No. 11 at No. 6, No. 10 at No. 7 and No. 9 at No. 8. In the second round, the No. 1 seed will play the winner of the 8 vs. 9 game; the No. 2 seed will play the winner of 6 vs. 11; the No. 3 seed will play the winner of 7 vs. 10 and the No. 4 seed will play the winner of 5 vs. 12.

 

Higher seeded teams will host playoff games during the first and second rounds before moving to neutral sites for the remaining rounds.

 

The expansion will increase the number of football playoff qualifiers from 224 to 336. Last year there were 709 schools, so that would be almost half of the schools qualifying for the postseason.

I know we've got some northern Kentucky folks on BGP who keep tabs on Ohio. Is this a good move or bad?

 

One instance where this could affect Kentucky is with increased availability to the playoffs, might more Ohio teams look to play Kentucky teams since it won't hurt their rating as much as perhaps in the past?

I like the move. Ohio has had deserving teams left out of the playoffs each year. The Winton Woods scenario last year was ridiculous (although unlikely to happen again since they've joined the ECC).

 

Questionable how much this will increase Ohio-Kentucky games. Outside of a few marquee match-ups, not sure how good the gates would be.

Just thinking, if Kentucky were to expand their playoffs, we would have to add schools from other states lol.

For Ohio it makes sense. As someone else mentioned, there are deserving teams left out every year. For Ky., however, it still needs a lot of fixes.
