14th Region Week 9 Review

Featured Replies

1) Hazard (18-4): The Bulldogs suffered they're first region loss of the season last week when they fell to crosstown rival, Perry County Central 65-64 in overtime on a night that Memorial Gym (Hazard's home court) was the first gym in Kentucky to be inducted into the KHSAA Hall of Fame. Hazard would bounce back with a 56-51 road win at Leslie County. Despite suffering the first region loss of the season, the Bulldogs remain at #1 this week as they are still the best team in the 14th region.

2) Knott County Central (16-4): The Patriots were off last week and won't return to action until Tuesday night in a big one when they travel to Memorial Gym to face the #1 Hazard Bulldogs. Hazard won the first meeting 62-54 in the 14th region all a classic at Breathitt County.

3) Perry County Central (9-13): After starting the season off horribly, the Commodores are slowly getting things going. The Commodores have won 5 straight with one of those wins coming on the road at #1 Hazard 65-64 in overtime. The Commodores will be on the road this week as they travel to Johnson Central on Tuesday and Harlan Independent on Saturday.

4) Estill County (15-7): The Engineers split 4 games last week, winning 2 and losing 2. The Engineers got things started off Monday as they cruised past Wellspring Home School Richmond KY 57-31, the Engineers followed up that win the very next night on Tuesday cruising past Wolfe County 69-56, the same team that defeated the Engineers 54-51 to start the season. Estill's streak would be short lived as they would fall in they're next two games over the weekend, getting upset by Buckhorn 71-59 on Friday and losing a thriller to Fleming County 47-46 on Saturday, the same team they defeated by 10 at the end of December. Estill County will host Breathitt County on Tuesday night before traveling to Lee County on Friday for a boy/girl district double header.

5) Wolfe County (14-6): After a tremendous start to the season for the Wolves, the tables have seemingly turned in the wrong direction. Wolfe County has lost 4 of they're previous 7 games. Wolfe County dropped a game to Estill County 69-56 last Tuesday but bounced back with a big district win over Jackson City 90-47. The Wolves will travel to Owsley County on Tuesday, host Lee County on Thursday, and travel to Knott County Central on Saturday.

6) Buckhorn (10-12): The Wildcats are on a roller coaster or a ride. After starting the season off horribly, Buckhorn has won 4 of they're last 5 games including a big impressive win over Estill County 71-59 last Friday. Can Buckhorn keep the momentum going? They have a very big week ahead. Tuesday at Powell County, Thursday at Owsley County and Saturday at home hosting #1 Hazard.

7) Cordia (8-12): The Lions have been off since they're last game on January 18th. They will return to action this coming Thursday as they travel to Letcher County Central for a big district game and Oneida Baptist Institute (at Jackson City) on Saturday. Long wait time for the Lions.

8) Breathitt County (8-12): Struggles continue for Breathitt County. The Bobcats picked up a big 73-55 win over Prestonsburg on Saturday but before that, they had lost 4 straight and are currently 4-7 in region play. Breathitt County will be on the road this week as they travel to Estill County on Tuesday, Russell County on Friday and Clinton County on Saturday. Tough week for the Bobcats.

9) Leslie County (9-13): The Eagles are stirring. Leslie County started off rough and was rough most of the season but the Eagles are playing much better as of late, winning 5 of they're last 8. One of those losses came by 5 points to the #1 ranked team in the region, Hazard. Leslie County will be on the road this week at Harlan Independent on Monday and Williamsburg on Thursday.

10) Letcher County Central (4-14): The struggles continue for Letcher County Central. The Cougars have now lost 8 of they're last 9 games. It doesn't get any easier this week either as they have 4 games on the schedule. Tuesday vs. East Ridge, Thursday vs. Cordia, Friday at Powell County and Saturday vs. Pike County Central.

11) Powell County (4-14): The Pirates lost they're only game of the week last week. 46-41 to Harrison County. The Pirates will be at home this week hosting Buckhorn on Tuesday and Letcher County Central on Friday.

12) Owsley County (9-10): The Owls have now lost 4 of they're last 5 games. It doesn't get any easier this week as they will host Wolfe County on Tuesday, Buckhorn on Thursday and travel to Jackson City on Friday.

13) Jackson City (9-13): Jackson City has countered they're 3 game win streak and a 2 game losing streak. Jackson City will travel to Lee County on Tuesday, host Owsley County on Friday and Fairview on Saturday. Can they get things turned back around?

14) Lee County (4-17): The Bobcats dropped both games last week, falling 69-59 to Leslie County at home and 92-52 to Betsy Layne. Both at home.

15) June Buchanan (1-12): The losses continue to pile up for the Crusaders as they have now lost 4 straight. Will they get another win this season?
