article 12th Region Week 7 Review

1) Somerset (16-2) – The Briar Jumpers punched their ticket for the All A State Tournament where they face 8th region champion Gallatin County in the opening round. There is a definite chance that they could end the week cutting down the nets at McBrayer. They made it through the regional tournament by knocking off Danville in one of the games of the season for the region so far as they prevailed in double overtime 72-70, led Kade Grundy with 20 points and Gavin Stevens with 18.

2) Pulaski County (14-3) – The Maroons had a big week, defeating Lincoln County and Southwestern, putting them firmly in the second spot this week. Pulaski had not really been challenged since before Christmas so to see them get to big wins as their schedule toughens up leads to promising speculation about their regional title chances. A matchup with number 1 Somerset is in the near future, but first they must face Clay County, Casey County, and Russell County this week.

3) Danville (14-5) – Danville falls just one spot with the loss to Somerset as that win over Lincoln County still shines on their recent resume. They have an off-week and do not return to playing the top echelon of the region until almost the second week of February when they take on Boyle County, Pulaski County and Lincoln County again in the span of seven days.

4) Lincoln County (12-5) – Lincoln County fell to Pulaski County but got two blowout wins over Boyle County and Cordia. They face Garrard County, Madison Central, and Bardstown this week as they look to stretch their winning streak after the back to back losses to Danville and Pulaski.

5) East Jessamine (12-5) – The Jaguars lead what has clearly become the second tier of teams in the 12th. Somerset, Pulaski County, Danville, and Lincoln County have all marked themselves as nearly interchangeable members of the top four teams. East Jessamine, with wins over Madison Southern and district foe West Jessamine, currently sits atop of a similarly nearly interchangeable group of six teams in the next tier of competition. Ben McNew continues to shine as he dropped 18 against the Colts. East has a big challenge Tuesday as they host the Knights of Lexington Catholic before facing Carroll County.

6) Boyle County (7-6) – Boyle had a very polarizing week as they defeated Mercer County before being blown out by thirty to visiting Lincoln County. They visit Collins and Garrard County this week.

7) Mercer County (10-7) – The Titans fell to the Rebels of Boyle County but bounced back with a six point victory over Corbin behind Jamisen Lewis’ 27 points. They travel to nearby Burgin this week before facing another district rival on the road in Nicholasville as they take on West Jessamine before finishing up the week hosting Heart for Christ out of Louisville.

8) West Jessamine (10-8) – West Jessamine has shown signs of greatness this year but has failed to find consistency. They defeated Model solidly on the road before losing their crosstown matchup against East Jessamine. The Colts travel to Madison Central before hosting district opponent Mercer County.

9) Southwestern (11-9) – Southwestern dropped three losses this week to Estill County, Pulaski County and Tates Creek. They look to bounce back this week with trips to McCreary Central and Bell County.

10) Wayne County (10-7) – The Cardinals fell to South Laurel and nearly avoided a road loss at McCreary Central, defeating the Raiders by 7 in overtime. They face Rockcastle County before playing Marion County in the Toyota Classic.

11) McCreary County Central (7-12) – The Raiders find themselves in a weird position as they cannot yet but placed with the second tier of teams in the region but they have definitely separated themselves from the group at the bottom. McCreary dropped two losses to Russell County and Wayne County. They face only Southwestern this week and are in search of a signature win, be it against the Warriors or their opponent after that, Lincoln County.

12) Danville Christian (11-6) – Danville Christian fell to Danville in the All A but bounced back with wins over White Academy and Heritage Academy. They travel to Berea this week to face the Pirates.

13) Rockcastle County (5-12) – The Rockets fell to North Laurel but defeated Casey County at home by 12. This week they take on Barbourville and Wayne County.

14) Garrard County (3-12) – Brayden Sebastian has returned. The star of the Golden Lions did not take long to return to form, dropping 28 in a win over Western Hills and 24 in a loss at Madison Southern. If they want to prove themselves as a qualified post-season threat, they have their chances this week with games at home against Lincoln County and Boyle County (followed the week after by a home game against Danville). This challenging stretch could not have been timed any better as Sebastian could conceivably help the Golden Lions pull off at least one upset in the near future.

15) Casey County (2-16) – Casey County fell to Anderson County and Rockcastle County, both at home. They travel to Pulaski County this week to face the Maroons before squaring off at home against Western Hills.

16) Burgin (1 – 15) – The Bulldogs failed to register a win this week against Somerset or White Academy. They face district foe Mercer County before taking on Eminence and Williamstown.

17) Kentucky School for the Deaf (0-6) – The Colonels were off last week but host the Mason Dixon Tournament this week, opening up with their South Carolina counterparts.

Interesting games tonight include:

Lincoln @ Garrard - How will the Lions improved with Sebastian stack up with one of the top teams in the 12th?

 

Boyle @ Collins - Can the young rebels & Hotchkiss learn from tough losses and compete with a very good Collins team?

 

West Jess @ Madison Central - West has a solid team and can boost confidence with a win at Central.

 

Wayne Co @ Rockcastle Co - Wayne Co is consistently a competitor in the 12th, they are always a threat come tourney time. Look for the Cardinals to pull this one out.

 

Casey @ Pulaski - Casey is struggling to get wins. Pulaski is near the top of the 12th and will be a uphill challenge for the Rebels.

 

Upset of the night comes with East Jess over the visiting Knights of Lexington Catholic. Jaguars are a solid team and just might squeak this one out at home.
