article 14th Region Week 7 Review

[All State Baseball]

1) Hazard (14-2): Hazard remains unbeaten in the new year, in region and district play as they picked up two more region and district wins last week. Wade Phelphrey lifted the Bulldogs past Perry County Central with a buzzer beater. Hazard wouldn't have any trouble in they're other game as they would roll past the Buckhorn Wildcats 76-50. This week's schedule is a little tougher for the Bulldogs as they head to EKU for the All "A" State Tournament. They open up with Louisville Collegiate on Thursday at 5 PM.

2) Knott County Central (13-4): The Patriots won they're only game of the week, defeating Cordia 75-64. Patriots move to 4-0 in district play with the win. The Patriots will travel to Floyd Central on Monday night then return home to host Letcher County Central on Thursday and Belfry on Saturday.

3) Wolfe County (12-4): After a good start to the season which carried through halfway, the Wolves have lost 2 of they're last 3 games. 54-51 to Hazard in the 14th Region All "A" Classic and Onedia Baptist Institute 79-65. They're lone win came in blowout fashion against Lee County 91-41. Wolfe County's schedule gets a little tougher this week. They travel to Perry County Central on Tuesday, host Breathitt County on Friday in a big 55th district showdown and travel to Lynn Camp on Saturday.

 

4) Estill County (12-5): Estill County picks up they're 1,000 win with a 68-50 blowout win over Powell County on Friday. That wasn't the only game for the Engineers last week nor was it they're only win. The Engineers picked up a big 52-41 win over Southwestern on Tuesday night. The Engineers won't be leaving the train station this week as they will welcome in Owsley County (Tuesday), Lee County (Friday) and Letcher County Central (Saturday). Both games against Owsley and Lee will be boy girl double headers with Boys playing at 8. Estill County and Letcher County Central will tip at 2 on Saturday.

5) Cordia (8-12): The struggles for the Lions continue. Cordia has now lost 2 straight and 4 of they're last 6 games. Both of they're losses were by double digits, losing 75-64 to Knott County Central and 86-63 to Lincoln County. They edged out Buckhorn for they're only win of the week 65-59. The Lions won't return to action until Jan. 30th where they will host Breathitt County, a team they defeated earlier in the season 74-68.

 

6) Perry County Central (5-13): The Commodores picked up they're 5th win last week defeating North Laurel 76-65 but not before falling to crosstown rival, Hazard 57-55 on a buzzer beater. With the victory over North Laurel, the Commodores had snapped a 4 game losing streak. Perry County Central will be home this week as they host Wolfe County on Tuesday and Cumberland Homeschool, Corbin KY on Saturday.

 

7) Breathitt County (7-9): After a rough start to the season, Breathitt County is playing better as of late. They've won 3 of they're last 5 games with two of those wins coming last week, defeating Leslie County 84-70 and Jackson City 77-69. Even though they fell to George Rogers Clark, the Bobcats gave the Cardinals all they wanted and then some as they nearly upended the Cardinals in the loss 77-74 in overtime. Bobcats will be out of the den this week as they will travel to Buckhorn to take on the Wildcats on Wednesday and Wolfe County on Friday.

 

8) Buckhorn (6-10): The Wildcats have hit a rough spot, having lost 5 of 6 and with the losses last week, they have now lost 3 straight. They fell to Cordia 75-69 and Hazard 76-50. Buckhorn will look to get back on track this week but it won't be easy as they will be on the road at Letcher County Central on Tuesday, return home to face Breathitt County on Wednesday and Leslie County on Friday.

9) Owsley County (8-6): The Owls have been playing really really well as of late, winning 3 straight and 5 of they're last 6 games. One of those wins came against Powell County, a team they hadn't beaten since in about 10 years or so. Owsley County also sits at 3-1 in district play. Schedule for the week is a little tough for the Owls as they will leave the nest and travel to Estill County on Tuesday and Powell County on Friday in two big district games, the final two district games of the regular season for the Owls.

 

10) Jackson City (6-11): After a good start to the season, the Tigers have hit a rough stretch lately. They picked up a 108-81 win over Jenkins last week but that's only they're second win since December 19th. They have gone 2-9 since December 20th. Jackson City will host Lee County on Tuesday and travel to Walden on on Friday.

 

11) Letcher County Central (3-12): With three losses last week, the Cougars skid has now reached 6 straight. Letcher County Central will host Buckhorn on Tuesday before traveling to Knott County Central (Thursday) and Estill County (Saturday).

 

12) Leslie County (5-10): After a rough start to the season, the Eagles have been playing better as of late, winning 4 of they're last 6 games.

13) Powell County (3-12): The Pirates have now lost 6 straight and 8 of they're last 9 games. The Pirates fell to Owsley County, a team they hadn't lost to in about 10 years or so. The skid streak could continue this week as they will host Menifee County on Tuesday, Owsley County on Friday and Hazard on Saturday.

14) Lee County (3-13): The Bobcats struggles continue as they have now lost 9 of they're last 10 games and are currently 0-3 in district play.

 

15) June Buchanan (1-8): The Crusaders picked up they're first win on the season last week, defeating Jenkins 93-67.
