With the Holiday's quickly approaching, this will be an abbreviated review for week 3 around the 3rd Region. Once again this season, it feels like the 3rd Region is lagging behind the state when it comes to top tier teams but it should be a fun race at the top of the region to see who can get to Rupp. The bottom half of the region had an extra rough week this week. Lets get to it....

 

1. Ohio County Eagles (7-0) UP 1

Tony Hopper has his Eagles off to a red hot start. They moved to 2-0 in district play on Tuesday with a big win over Muhlenberg. The Eagles also picked up wins over Warren East and Caverna at Warren East over the weekend. Right now, Ohio County is extremely balanced, placing 5 players in double figures. They will host their own Holiday Tournament this week.

 

2. Owensboro Red Devils (7-3) DOWN 1

The Devils were tested this week against some very tough programs. They were able to put together a big 4th quarter to defeat Christian County on Tuesday. They struggled a bit in the Fern Creek Holiday Tournament with losses to J-Town and Waggener before bouncing back against Valley and Glasgow. Coach Drake continues his tough campaign this week with the Bowling Green Holiday Tournament.

 

3. Breckenridge County Tigers (6-1) UP 1

The Tigers have reeled off 5 straight wins. With the loss of a very productive senior class, including 3rd Region Player of the Year, Kobe Poole, many expected the Tigers to start slow but that has not been the case. They scored wins over Whitesville and Meade this past week. The Fighting Tigers will head to Daytona Beach for a New Year's Tournament in the sun.

 

4. Butler County Bears (8-0) UP 2

Calvin Dockery's Bears have been the surprise of the region thus far. They reeled off 4 wins this week over Apollo, Hickman, Todd and Mclean. Parker Rice is off to a great start averaging 21 points and 10 boards per game. The Bears will stay undefeated through the week as they are off for the Holidays.

 

5. Owensboro Catholic Aces (5-3) SAME

The Aces went 2-1 in Butler County with wins over Todd County and Hickman before falling to Murray. Sophomore PG Brian Griffin leads the way for the Aces, with 19 points per game. Catholic heads to Logan County for their holiday tournament this week.

 

6. Muhlenberg County Mustangs (5-4) DOWN 2

While the Mustangs only went 1-3 last week, they lost a couple very close games out of state teams. They did however, drop a road district game to Ohio County. Muhlenberg's lone win came against Cane Ridge, TN. They travel to the Lexington Christian Holiday Tournament this week.

 

7. Mclean County Cougars (7-3) SAME

The Cougars split 4 games this week, with wins over Hickman and Whitesville and losses to Murray and Butler County in overtime. Logan Patterson leads the Cougars thru the first 10 games of the season with 21 points and 10 boards per. The Cougars head to Hancock County for their Holiday Tournament this week.

 

8. Daviess County Panthers (5-5) UP 1

Coach Hayden's group continues to show improvement, going 2-2 this past week. They dropped games to Webster and Nelson before bouncing back with wins over Hancock and Hoptown. The Panthers head to the Logan County Christmas Tournament this week.

 

9. Grayson County Cougars (3-5) DOWN 1

The Cougars dropped 3 games this week to very tough competition in Doss, E-Town and Henderson County. They will look to bounce back this week at Logan County.

 

10. Whitesville Trinity Raders (3-5) SAME

The Raiders struggled this week with 3 consecutive losses to Breckenridge, Western and Crittenden County. They will look to turn things around at the Williamstown Holiday Tournament.

 

11. Meade County Greenwave (2-5) SAME

The Waves started the week with a nice win over Shelby County but dropped games at Breckenridge and Barren County to finish the week. They face Warren East in their lone game this week.

 

12. Hancock County Hornets (2-6) UP 2

The Hornets battled tough this week with a win over Trigg County. They also dropped a close game to Daviess County and another to Graves County. The Hornets host their own Holiday Tournament this week.

 

13. Edmonson County Wildcats (2-7) DOWN 1

The Wildcats lost all 3 games at home this week to the likes of Metcalfe, Green County and Thomas Nelson. They will head to the Ohio County Holiday Tournament this week.

 

14. Apollo Eagles (0-8) DOWN 1

The Eagles were blown out this week at the hands of Logan County and South Warren. They batted Butler County to a close game before falling at home to start the week. They will head across the river to the South Spencer Holiday Tournament this week.

 

15. Cloverport Aces (1-7) SAME

The Aces lost three straight this week to Cannelton, IN, Mclean County and Louisville Western. They are off this week for the holiday break.
