Sixth Region Week 2 Review - A Jumble At The Top

Featured Replies

The Sixth Region appears to be wide open. Two weeks into the season and there is only one remaining undefeated team, the Jeffersontown Chargers. Their performance this week was sufficient to move the Chargers into the top spot in the rankings, with the Pleasure Ridge Park Panthers moving up into the number two spot. But who knows – next week’s rankings may look completely different. That might be the case in the Sixth Region for a while.

This week brings the always entertaining King of the Bluegrass Tournament at Fairdale, although Fairdale is the only Sixth Region team participating in this year’s tournament. This week also brings the Century Mortgage Derby City Jam, whose field includes five Sixth Region teams. Other teams will be spreading out to other tournaments around the state. Here’s hoping for holiday success for everyone.

TEAM RANKINGS

1. Jeffersontown Chargers (4-0)

The Chargers have come out of the gate in impressive fashion, going to 4-0 this week with wins over Pleasure Ridge Park (60-55) and Doss (56-53). Their success, along with other teams’ losses, have propelled the Chargers into the top spot in the rankings. J’Town plays Iroquois on Tuesday before participating in the Century Mortgage Derby City Jam, with its first game being against Waggener.

2. Pleasure Ridge Park Panthers (4-1)

The Panthers suffered their first loss of the season at the hands of Jeffersontown 60-55 but then bounced back to beat Bullitt East 69-58 and Valley 74-35. Through the first four games, Josh Williams was leading the way in both scoring (17.5 ppg) and rebounding (8.5 rpg). Next up for PRP is the Century Mortgage Derby City Jam.

3. Fern Creek Tigers (3-3)

Fern Creek’s results don’t seem to be consistent with its talent. The Tigers went 1-2 this week, beating Trinity 55-49 but losing to Male (67-61) and Manual (69-61). Fern Creek drops in the rankings for now; we’ll see where they go from here. Up next is a game against Whitefield Academy and then the Century Mortgage Derby City Jam.

4. Butler Bears (3-2)

After a 72-63 victory over the Western Warriors, the Bears dropped games to the Male Bulldogs (63-48) and the Mercer County Titans (53-48). The loss to Male was expected, but the loss to what was a 1-2 Mercer County team was not, resulting in the Bears dropping in the rankings. Butler will look to get back to winning ways on Tuesday against Doss and then plays Rowan County and George Rogers Clark in the Kentucky Bank Challenge at Rowan County.

5. DeSales Colts (3-3)

DeSales returned from California to play only once this week, losing to the Eastern Eagles 63-47. The Colts play Bullitt East on Tuesday before playing in the Century Mortgage Derby City Jam.

6. Fairdale Bulldogs (2-2)

The Bulldogs ran past Beth Haven 108-62 but then lost to Holy Cross 67-60. Fairdale plays the Moore Mustangs on Monday before hosting and playing in the King of the Bluegrass Tournament, opening the tournament against Martin County.

7. Doss Dragons (2-2)

Doss lost the only game it played this week, falling to Jeffersontown 56-53. The Dragons play Butler on Tuesday before heading to Henderson County to play in the Independence Bank Classic.

8. Bullitt East Chargers (2-4)

The Chargers fall in the rankings after going 0-3 for the week, a week that included a 69-58 loss to Sixth Region foe Pleasure Ridge Park. The other losses were to Collins (71-66) and West Jessamine (80-64). Through five games, Zak Perdew was leading the Chargers in scoring at 21.8 ppg. Up this week are games against DeSales and Spencer County.

9. North Bullitt Eagles (4-2)

The Eagles had a good week with wins against Moore (65-58) and Bullitt Central (67-63) before falling to Bardstown 82-58. The Eagles play Southern on Tuesday before playing in the Independence Bank Classic at Henderson County.

10. Bullitt Central Cougars (3-3)

The Cougars split the two games they played this week, topping Southern 64-54 and losing to North Bullitt 67-63. Bullitt Central plays twice this week, hosting North Hardin on Tuesday before playing West Jessamine at Pulaski County as part of the M & W Shootout.

11. Holy Cross Cougars (5-1)

Holy Cross went a perfect 3-0 this week with wins against Iroquois (65-64, in overtime), Fairdale (67-60), and Sayre (56-44). The win over Fairdale was particularly impressive. The Cougars play Valley on Friday and then will play Rock Creek Academy, a team from Sellersburg, Indiana, on Saturday.

12. Western Warriors (3-4)

The Warriors had an interesting week. After playing well but losing to Butler 72-63, Western beat Kentucky Country Day 71-54. But then playing with three players suspended, the Warriors fell to Collegiate 48-33. I believe those players were still suspended against Carroll County, who beat the Warriors 87-86. Western hosts the Valley Vikings on Tuesday before heading to Whitesville to play in the Whitesville Trinity Christmas Classic.

13. Moore Mustangs (4-2)

Moore went 1-2 this week, beating Meade County 51-50 but falling to North Bullitt (65-58) and North Oldham (77-76). The Mustangs’ only game this week is against Fairdale on Monday night.

14. Iroquois Raiders (3-2)

The Raiders suffered a tough 65-64 overtime loss to Holy Cross and lost to Seneca 70-60 before ending the week with a 69-55 win over Ryle. Iroquois plays Jeffersontown during the week and then will play Bethlehem and Collegiate in the Louisville Collegiate Classic.

15. Southern Trojans (1-4)

Southern dropped the two games it played this week, falling to Bullitt Central 64-54 and Waggener 83-67. The Trojans play North Bullitt on Thursday and then play Bourbon County in Lexington as part of the Henry Clay Holiday Invitational.16.

16.Valley Vikings (1-2)

The Vikings fell to Pleasure Ridge Park 74-35 in the only game they played this week. Valley plays at Western on Tuesday before participating in the Century Mortgage Derby City Jam.

17. Whitefield Academy Wildcats (3-1)

Whitefield had a perfect week, scoring wins against Kentucky Country Day (85-74), Brown (62-48), and Adair County (92-80). The Wildcats play Fern Creek on Monday before traveling to Gatlinburg, TN to play in the Smoky Mountain Classic.

18. Beth Haven Bears (1-3)

Beth Haven dropped the two games it played this week, falling to Fairdale 108-62 and Danville Christian 78-71. The sole game on the Bears’ schedule this week is against Pleasure Ridge Park on Tuesday.

19. Evangel Christian Eagles (1-1)

Evangel Christian did not play this week. The Eagles face Burgin on Tuesday before playing Berea in the Berea All A Holiday Classic.
