Beechwood 38 Newport 19

Final! Tigers first 2A District Championship.

The game officials let this one get out of hand. However, if Newport had any discipline, then this would have been a much closer game.

Any comment on tonight's game must start with these two words - Mason Williams.

Newport put forth a very good effort. It was 17-13 at halftime with two great touchdown runs by Newport quarterback Kaleal Davis, one for 81 yards, keeping Newport in the game. Both teams were forced to punt their first possessions of the second half. That is where Beechwood's Mason Williams took the game on his shoulders. He received a Newport punt at the 45 and took it straight back up the middle. At least three times in the return Newport appeared to have Williams tackled and he broke free. Williams took that punt return into the end zone and got Beechwood back on top by two scores at 24-13. Then on Newport's very next possession, Williams struck again intercepting a pass by Davis. That gave Beechwood the ball at the Newport 28. The Tigers converted that interception generated possession into another score and now it was 31-13. That is your ballgame. In one two minutes stretch Mason Williams put the Tigers on his back and said we are winning this game right here and now.

Congratulations to Newport on a season that could turn their program into a new direction. Best of luck to Kaleal Davis at Indiana State.
