Competitive Cheerleading and School

Featured Replies

So over the past week there has been lots of competitive cheer activity going on that takes students out of the classroom for a week or more.

Why does this not happen at the end of May or June?

Totally not familiar with this situation. Is this school related? Or, squads outside school (like AAU basketball)?

Competitive cheer. Not school related. Students missing a week or more of school to attend.

Sounds like unexcused abences. Hope the teachers allow make up work. Have seen many GPAs destroyed by zeroes given on unexcused absences. Wife was cheerleader at Morehead and got a letter grade reduction because English prof didn't honor any absence excuse. She had an away game at Tennessee Tech. Only C she ever got in college.

The timing is tough because when they return, there are very few days remaining to make up the work, in addition to missed content learned for final exams.

My issue is why can’t these competitions happen in the summer, like AAU b-ball.

Could not agree more. Suspect it is driven by the money greed of organizers. If they change it to after school is out they know all the family conflicts arise (vacations). Under present schedule team attendance is only conflicted by educational priorities.....which for many reasons can become secondary. Tough decision for parents that have seen their child put so much into their efforts. Can't see this changing until coach's threaten non-participation to organizers and be willing to follow through.

They could fill out an EHO form and not be given unexcused absences.

For competitive cheer the national competition is Summit which is held at Disney in Orlando each year. Not just any team can attend, they must win a bid to compete. I'm guessing since it is held at Disney and to get the best rates and not interfere with their summer travelers they allow Varsity Cheer to have it the last week of April and beginning of May. It is a weekend competition but due to the travel many leave on Thursday and return on Monday. Many schools do allow and EHO for this trip.
