Perry County Central (14th Region Champions) Team/State Tournament Preview

Recommended Posts

School Name: Perry County Central.

Nickname: Commodores.

Head Coach: Shannon Hoskins.

District: 54th.

Region: 14th.

The Commodores are once again heading back to Rupp Arena for the KHSAA Boys Sweet 16. Per KHSAA Scoreboard (dates back to the 1997-98 season) this will be Commodores 7th trip to the boys sweet 16 basketball tournament. Coming into the 2018/19 basketball season, Perry County Central was ranked #4 in the Bluegrasspreps.com Boys 14th Region Season Preview and never climbed no higher than #3 throughout the entire season as the #1 (Knott County Central) and #2 (Breathitt County) spots were claimed all season long.

The Commodores struggled majority of the season but got things turned around when they landed Jalyn Williams who transfered in from Scott County. Ever since that took place, the Commodores have been a completely different team. 14-2 in their last 12 games. This includes a current 7 game win streak.

It wasn't an easy path to the sweet 16 for the Commodores as they would have to take on teams they've either already beaten twice this season or try and beat teams that had beaten them. They say it's hard to beat a team three times in one season. The Commodores proved that it's true and not so true. Perry County Central had defeated Hazard twice this season by 5 and 2 points in both matchups. They had fallen twice on their own home court to Knott County Central, both by 4.

The Commodores would defeat Hazard in the 54th district championship game 49-44 and would be on the winners side of the bracket and they would open up with Wolfe County, a team they defeated 104-76 earlier in the season on Wolfe County's own home court. Perry County Central would cruise past the Wolves once again, 83-59. This would set up another rematch with none else than the Patriots of Knott County Central. The Commodores got revenge on Knott County Central, defeating the Patriots 47-41 in the semi-finals of the 14th region tournament. Hazard would defeat both Breathitt County (77-66) and Powell County (58-39) which would set up an all 54th district and an all Perry County regional final between Perry County Central and Hazard to see who would go on to the KHSAA Sweet 16. Perry County Central had defeated Hazard 3 times already this season. Could they make it a 4th time? That would be correct. Perry County Central would defeat Hazard for a 4th time this season, 53-48.

Perry County Central has been to the sweet 16 (dating back to the 97/98 season) 7 times. They've lost in the 1st round 4 of those 7 trips. Two of those, they have lost in the 2nd round. What will happen when they make ti to Rupp Arean in the 2018/19 season?

1998/99: Lost in the 1st Round to Pleasure Ridge Park 76-59.

1999/00: Lost in the 1st Round to Iroquois 69-54.

2003/04: Lost in the 2nd Round to Warren Central 55-31. Defeated Morgan County 66-45 in the opening round.

2004/05: Lost in the 1st round to Elizabethtown 70-60.

2010/11: Lost in the 1st Round to Wayne County 68-58.

2016/17: Lost in the 2nd Round to Covington Scott 74-52. Defeated Pikeville 61-46 in the opening round.

2018/19: ?

Since the 1997/98 seasons (KHSAA Scoreboard), the 14th region hasn't been so hot when it comes to the sweet 16. In fact, they've lost in the 1st round 15 times. The team that has won the 14th region has only made it to the second round and they've been knocked out 6 times. No one has made it past the 2nd round of the sweet 16 from the 14th region. That's bad news for 14th region fans but gives them hope because all streaks/records are meant to be broken.

Perry County Central will meet Louisville Butler on Thursday at noon. Perry County Central comes in with a 19-12 record. Louisville Butler comes in with a record of 25-7.

Perry County Central: Players To Watch:

Noah Back (SR): Averaging 18 points a game. Probably the best 3 point shooter in the region coming in at 42% from long range. When he gets hot, he can fill it up in a hurry. Mr. Clutch when it comes to free throw shooting, 82%.

Noah Caudill (SR): Averaging 13 points a game. Has scored 400 points so far this season. May not be the best go to scorer for Perry County Central but averages 11 boards a game and is a great defensive presence.

DeAndre Reed (JR), Was 14th region tournament MVP. Doesn't do a lot of scoring but is one of many great defensive guys that Coach Shannon Hoskins has. Has only played in 11 games this season.

Jalyn Williams (SR). Came in from Scott County and completely transformed the Commodores. He doesn't average much offensively but is a good defender. On the offensive side, he gets close to the rim, someone is gonna get dunked on.

Marquis Frazier (SR): He's listed on the KHSAA Roster but has yet to play. Waiting on eligibility from KHSAA.
