Where's the Defense ?!?

Look over all these scores tonight...

 

Have you guys ever seen such overall HIGH scoring Regional Championship games among all the classes before ?!?

 

Is this an indicator of how the high school game is changing ?

 

Are we beginning to see less emphasis on fundamental defensive football ?!?

It's kind of mixed bag. In seven of the 16 games the winning team held their opponent to 14 or less. That's pretty good.

On the other hand 9 of the 32 teams scored 40 or more, and only 4 winners were held to less than 30 points. That seems like a lot to me.

I feel this is some what of a product of the new playoff format. IMO the down side of the new format is that, because of intra-district play, you get 8 district champions not the 8 best teams. I think most of these teams would have been there anyway, but there are a few teams that would have been playing last night, that lost in round 2.
