UK's First Bowl Game Since 1952?

Several segments on TV have made the comment that this was UK's first New Years bowl since 1952. Is that right? I could have sworn the Outback Bowl from 18ish years ago was a New Years Day or am I mistaken? Or since that was during the time frame that got UK on probation does it not count?
