Got into a debate with a coach today over the fair catch signal in high school...can someone explain the rule on this? Hurry, I have $20 on it :)

the coach says that it is one arm(either)waived one time from top to bottom across the body. I say no way; anyone????

Rule 2-9-3 A valid fair-catch signal is the extending and lateral waving of 1 arm, at full length above the head, by any member of the recieving team.

Bullwinkle is correct in describing the signal, but let me add...

A valid fair-catch signal must be given while the kick is in flight (before it is grounded or touched by R). Invalid fair catch signal is a 5 yard penalty.
