Not to be the negative one here, but isn't it fair to say this is an unproven staff, despite the hype? Johnson may have been a good head coach and Wood a good assistant, but what about these other guys? Just because a guy played at UK (or any other school) doesn't mean it's going to work out. Seen it not work out several times.

 

Johnson will have to add some quality to that staff to make a difference next season, in my opinion.

Yep. Local schools will have to get ready to defend a little Georgia Tech, Army, and Navy. Dunbar had a really good Freshman team this year. I believe Wes will do well at Dunbar. He knows how to coach kids up and compete when over matched athletically. He did that very well at West Jessamine from what I can tell. Hope Dunbar gives Wes a chance to build something at Dunbar because it will take time.

 

Dunbar did have a nice freshman team, but I was told they won the fifth place game in the playoffs they had. Not real sure about that. I mean, fifth out of 10 or 11 teams isn't much to write home about.

 

With that said, it will take some time. I support PLD from a distance, knowing some parents from there. Johnson has his work cut out for sure.

Randy Wood left West Jessamine as an assistant back when they were both together to go to Morgan County where he had an 8-4 and 7-4 seasons. He then came back to West Jessamine as their head coach for two years where he had a 9-3 season in his last year.

 

We aren't talking 8-4, 7-4 and 9-3 at powerhouses, but at places who more years than not have had trouble playing dead in a cowboy and Indian movie.

 

Am I missing something here even greater? Did some homers hire and his all star staff want to come to Dunbar that PLD chose not to hire? Add to the fact that men seem to be fleeing these roles as is in droves to go along with the fact that finding good assistant coaches is even a greater task. What's not to like?

Guess what isn't overrated though? The names of some of these guys. Those resonate with 14-18 year olds as much as anything.

 

Throw in a couple of guys that can coach some ball and you might have something. Few staffs out there are stacked or even close. If you can have one or two dang good ones counting yourself then you're well ahead of the curve IMO.

You've made some valid points, but I can't dismiss this sanguinness about this hire that makes me shake my head. Wes Johnson has coached ONE year since 2008, and his teams at West Jessamine did not do well his last three years there. That's called a decline, not an all-time coach.

 

Randy Wood sounds like a good coach, but where in the heck has he been lately? I'd like to know. To think that this staff will come to Dunbar and bring Navy or Georgia Tech's offense, combined with some version of the run-and-shoot, and just magically turn things around is asisnine, and laughable on some levels.

 

Bottom line, Dunbar could not close the deal with some candidates, and they were left with Johnson, whom, by the way, applied for the job two years ago and wasn't hired. I just have some problems with not hiring a guy, then he does nothing for two years, and he is all of sudden the man for the job. Give me a break.

 

Now, with that said, I'll be the first to eat crow if this guy turns it around; I hope he turns it around. But, let's pump the brakes a little.
