Interesting matchup between the 8th and the 9th regions Monday night in Crestwood.

 

South Oldham (4-1) plays host to the Covington Holy Cross Indians (2-1).

 

The two teams have one common opponent - the last team each team played, Grant County. HC blasted the Braves by 35; South outlasted Grant, 90-86.

 

Holy Cross features four players who average in double figures. Nolan Schrand (14 ppg), Jordan Niehaus (13.5 ppg), Pete Knochelmann and Parker Zimmerman each average 11.5 ppg. Stats for just two games, however. The Indians didn't get much in the way of supporting points from the rest of the team, however, in those first two games.

 

South comes into the matchup on a three game winning streak since losing to Shelby County by six in game two. Arguably, the Dragons should probably be undefeated; they played against Shelby without leading scorer Devin Young, averaging over 16 ppg.

 

Young is averaging 16.7 ppg for South; sophomore Luke Morrison is scoring 15.8 / game, and Peyton Hicks checks in at 11 ppg. Ben Johnson leads South on the glass at 7.5 boards / game and Young and Hicks both average over six rebounds per contest.

 

So far, this South team is not a typical South team; the Dragons are hitting just 28.7% from beyond the arc, but this remains a focal point....South shoots 25 threes a game. Coach Steve Simpson believes this team can ultimately be a very good three point shooting squad. Devin Young has been devastating from long range; over three games, Young is 10 of 18 beyond the arc for 55.6%. Peyton Hicks is hitting 50% of his threes, but has attempted only 10 tries in four games.

 

Young, a definite candidate for 8th region POY, is also 10 for 10 at the stripe.

Should be an entertaining game. I call play by play for Holy Cross Radio and the Indians really played well last night against Grant Co getting 4 players in double figures, Zimmerman 21, Schrand 17, Niehaus 16 and Knochelman 11. I don't know much about the Dragons other than the Young kid played really well last year at Holy Cross. I'll be making the trip down and hoping for a good game.
