Raceland's "Iron Clad" Defense .....

Recommended Posts

1A Raceland's Offense has gotten several mentions in the past years but actually the Rams defense has been (and certainly in this season) the unit that drives this team. Our local newspaper highlighted this defense that hasn't allowed a point in their last 10 quarters of play. The Daily Independent weekly article "Monday Morning Quarterback" that highlights each weeks prep gridiron action mentioned this Raceland defense along with other NEKY area games / teams........

MONDAY MORNING QUARTERBACK: Rambled goose eggs | Sports | dailyindependent.com

"This Monday Morning Quarterback thought Raceland coach Michael Salmons was an offensive-minded guy. Well, he must be dong a little bit of coaching on defense, too. Perhaps an assistant wants the credit? Any takers?

I’m doubting defensive coordinator Mark Lewis will accept any praise, but maybe he deserves some, or a lot. The longtime coach has been a part of helping lead a few solid defenses — including some strong Ironton units — over the years.

As usual, it’s a collective coaching effort at Raceland, Salmons said.

“Those guys are doing a great job with our defense,” said the coach on Sunday.

The players, too, have gelled well early in the season.

Whatever the case, what the Rams are accomplishing right now is ridiculously impressive. They’ve achieved 10 straight scoreless quarters — that’s 120 minutes without allowing a single point.

Raceland hadn’t tossed back-to-back shutouts since 1992, when coach Bill Tom Ross guided the Rams to an 8-3 finish.

The Rams produced four goose eggs in 2014, Salmons’ first year."
