Paintsville Tigers - 2016 Grade

Featured Replies

A-

In 2016 the Tigers had an undefeated regular season, and finished their season 13-1 with their only loss coming at the hands of the 1A runner-up Hazard Bulldogs. Over the course of the season they managed a win over 4A Bourbon County and two wins over 1A Raceland.

Their offense averaged 37 points per game, and their average margin of victory was 28 points.

Paintsville is on the cusp of having what it takes to make their first return to the championship game since 1985.

Do you agree with a A- for Paintsville? What grade do you give the Tigers?

B+

My take on Paintsville might seem a little harsh. But in the past couple of years, I've heard and read so much about the talent on their roster that, despite their success(combined 26-2 in '15 & '16, consecutive semi-final appearances), I was left disappointed with the end result of last season.

No disrespect to Hazard, but a 1A roster with as much talent as the Tigers have should've at least made it to BG. Kent Phelps is headed to Wofford and Tyrese Allen, Tyler Couch, JW Phelps, & Jaylen Allen have all received D1 offers. Gotta get it done with talent like that at the small school level.

13-1 and a semi-final appearance on it's own merit probably deserves at least an A-, but I'm downgrading it to a B+ because of my expectations for them last year.
