Ex-Wildcat Derrick Ramsey

He is currently Secretary of Labor. I spoke to him at an event tonight on campus and reminisced about the 1977 season and the lone loss to Baylor. He reminded me that Mike Singletary was on that Baylor team. I had forgotten that. I asked him if the 1977 team was his favorite UK team and he said, while '77 had , by far, the best record, he liked the '75 team that went just 2-8-1 but lost several very close games. He said he realized they were going to be very good a year or two down the road. He was right. They beat UNC 21-0 in the Peach Bowl in '76 and went 10-1 in 1977 , finishing #4 in the final AP poll.

On a non-sports note, we talked a bit about academics and mathematics and he told me that math was always his best subject and that he almost decided to become a mathematician. It appears he has done just fine for himself. Prior to assuming the office of Secretary of Labor, Ramsey was Athletic Director at Coppin State from 2008-2015. He also served as Deputy Secretary of Commerce from 2003-2007. Ramsey was easily one of my favorite UK football players. I loved watching his UK teams play in '76 and '77.

Maybe we can convince him to blow up Kentucky Statue 18-A. Not his doing, but the labor and pension situation with Kentucky state employees is a mess.

Only time I've seen him in person was as a spokesman for diabetes prevention and care.
