Under normal circumstances duct cleaning is not needed.

 

Those air filters that you are supposed to change. They keep your ducts clean under normal operating conditions.

 

If the house has sat vacant for a long period then you probably should inspect or have inspected.

 

The biggest concern is moisture getting in your ducts during the time of year that you don't use them, and mold growing.

 

So, the thing to ask yourself is if moisture could have gotten in. I'm assuming you didn't pour anything into them.

 

-Are your ducts in a crawl space that typically harbors moisture?

You may want to get an A/C guy to check them.

 

-Is your duct work in an attic with a leaky roof?

Same as above.

 

-Is your A/C condensate line plugged allowing the condensate to get into the air intake? Check the line to make sure it's ok. Pull the panel off the side to look at your blower box. That would be the first place you would get mold from condensate backup.

 

-Is there any kind of odd smell coming from your vents.?

Could have a dead rodent or as someone else had. A dead snake.

 

If none of these apply, you're probably ok.

None of the above really apply. I purchased my house out of foreclosure about 8 years ago. The bank turned off the electricity for a month or so and the sump pump wasn't running and there was some minor water damage to drywall that was taken care of back then. That would really be the only time moisture would have been an issue down in my basement. It's now completely finished and never had an issue with smell or anything of that nature in the vents. My air filter is very dirty by the end of its cycle which caused concern to my wife. :idunno:

 

There damn sure better not be a snake in there. :lol2: Might have to put it up for sale and move out if that's the case.

Dirty air filter just means your air filter is doing its job, and you left it in too long.

 

The air filter is really there to protect your fan and coils. It's not really there for air quality.

 

Not changing it often enough will put stress on your system and increase the likelyhood of a costly repair. You should change your filter at least quarterly.

 

Also, unless someone in your home has super horrible allergies. Don't buy those hepa filters. They also put a strain on your system. The tiny particles that they filter out do not effect your coils.

 

I personally buy the inexpensive contractor pack, and change them every other month.
