February 11, 20179 yr I'm old school when it comes to my country music as well. Some of today's stuff is okay , but I like the old stuff. We've talked quite a bit about rock but who's on your Mt. Rushmore of Country Music? This is a hard one for me as I grew up listening to what my parents listened to, which was what is now considered Classic Country. My Mt. Rushmore... Begins with The Man in Black, Johnny Cash. He had a legendary career in the 60's and 70's and then came back in the 90's when every one had written him off with possibly the best work of his career. The Possum, George Jones...more charting records than anyone else, one of the most iconic songs of all time (He stopped loving her today) and enough great Duets with Tammy alone to make him a Hall of Famer. The Coal Miners Daughter, Loretta Lynn, possibly the most influential woman in country music history. She gets bonus points from me for actually writing the majority of her hits. The fourth spot is VERY hard for me, it would be one of these... Hank Williams, dude was just a straight up baller. Did more in less time than just about anyone, he was great. Conway Twitty, Conway was the dirtiest player in the game if you know what I mean. Hit was a Teen Heart Throb in Rock and Roll and left it all behind and moved over to country where he became one of the biggest acts of his time. Tammy Wynette, maybe the best voice of the classic country females. Sang with more emotion and grit than anyone, you could feel her hurting when she sang...plus Duet with George Jones on Golden Ring is in my opinion the GOAT of duets. Randy Travis, saved country music from it self in the late 80's early 90's. He took country back to it's roots and didn't apologize. Great Quote often attributed to him when told one of his songs had charted on the POP Top 40, he replied "Well get it off there" Honorable Mention Waylon Jennings...just listen to him for a couple of hours and you'll come away thinking "How is anyone better than this guy?" Dolly Parton, one of the best country singer/song writer combinations in history.

February 11, 20179 yr Look at me throwing out another unpopular opinion on BGP: Old country music sucks. To me country music started with Alan Jackson, George Strait, and Garth. Anyone before them is not all that great. Alright go ahead and hate. Two Words....JOHNNY CASH! I love Straight, Jackson and Brooks but... I hate you too

Thanks, my wife and I have had this very conversations and we always get stuck on number 4...so I've put some thought into this before tonight :lol2: My 15 year old Daughter that hates everything country music is today....loves classic 60's and 70's Country. Evidently we did something right raising her!!!

February 11, 20179 yr Author While I was never a huge Hank(Sr) fan, I recognize was an absolute legend the man is. No one accomplished more in such a short period of time. Can you imagine what he would have done with another thirty years?
