Couple of questions actually that are involved in this sequence. his happened last night at the Warren Central/Daviess County game. The first down marker is just across the Daviess County 40 yard line.

 

1st and 15 (WC 45) - Quarterback rushes. Hit out of bounds (WC 43). Personal foul, late hit. 15 yards. Still first down, not a new first and 10 (CORRECT?)

 

1st and 2 (DC 42) - Quarterback passes deep. Receiver commits offensive pass interference in catching the ball and going into the end zone. Referee calls offensive pass interference, 15 yards and loss of down. Now it is third down (CORRECT?)

 

3rd and 15 (WC 45) - Quarterback throws pass to running back who drops it at the WC 40. About 4 seconds after that the RB is drilled. Personal foul, late hit called. 15 yards from line of scrimmage. Not automatic first down. (CORRECT?)

First question: A late hit is a spot foul, yes? Does that change when a player is hit behind the line after not making a catch? Is that why a 15 yard penalty was walked off from the LOS after the dropped pass (on 3rd and 15) but wasn't when our QB was hit out of bounds (on 1st and 15)?

 

Second question: What exactly is the penalty for offensive pass interference? And doesn't the loss of down merely apply to the down that was just played? Central was essentially penalized two downs on that call, the first down just played and losing second down. I believe that it should have just been second down when the next play was run. The same thing happened in a later possession.

 

Additionally, it appeared to me that the ball was spotted wrong by the referee after this call. How Central lost 13 yards on the call is beyond me. 15 yards or 10 yards you would think.....

 

Third question: Is a personal foul late hit not an automatic first down? Isn't any personal foul on the defense an automatic first down for the offense?

Wrong , it would have actually been 2nd and 2. Offensive pass interference is assessed from LOS in that case. Personal Foul is a spot foul. The only Automatic 1st Downs in Kentucky High school Football are: Roughing the passer, roughing the kicker roughing the holder and roughing the snapper.

Defensive pass interference is also a first down.

 

And, a personal foul could be a spot foul, previous spot or even end of the run based on what kind of play it was and when it happened. Since the personal foul described above is described as a late hit then the down counted and it was second down following the mark off. Thus, when OPI was called the loss of down made it 3rd down.

 

It is clear though that the ones that seem to criticize the most also are the ones that (1) don't know the rules and (2) claim they do.

So the linesman mistakenly didn't have it at second down after the first penalty. That explains one of them. And personal foul, I simply didn't know. I still don't know how the 13 yard penalty worked. If it was from the LOS then you'd have though it would be 3rd and 17. It was to our benefit, but I just couldn't figure that out.

 

And FBRULES, I wasn't trying to be critical, but I simply did not know. If I claimed to know the rules, I wouldn't have asked. If that was directed at me, I do not appreciate it.

No, you certainly did not claim to know the rules and asked an honest question.

 

It's just a general observation based on reading other posts here and on other threads.
