From last night's scrimmage--quote of the night from a referee calling the game about KCD, "you guys are a 1A team? Wow. You're gonna kill some people."

 

Flattering. But that said, KCD has plenty to improve on last night's outing.

 

First, some observation about Bardstown--high energy, came to play, have some real athletes at the skill positions and took advantage of some poor tackling by the KCD secondary to score twice on the Bearcats. Bardstown ought to be pleased with the effort and and a number of aspects of the passing game. Great kids, great sportsmanship....classy program.

 

I think Eastern showed some toughness and skill especially at Linebacker, Safety and Wideouts. DeAnte Washington had a good night especially on offense as a receiver. Eastern will win some games this year.

 

KCD had a couple of lapses on defense--the secondary tackling was suspect on two or three plays that made for some home runs for Bardstown. The scoring ended up 21 for KCD and 14 for Bardstown--this was a combination of 10 play sets and the 15 minute running clock full scrimmage at the end of the night. KCD also scored on Eastern with a nifty pass over the middle for about 30 yards to Gianni Minor from Jackson Diaz. The way the round robin scrimmage format worked, KCD did not play defense against the Eagles.

 

As expected, KCD played things pretty close to vest...can't know how Bardstown and Eastern approached things offensively, but saw some stunting on Eastern's part from a defensive perspective.

 

Key takeaways for KCD: Played well against larger schools, need to improve defensive back play in general, also defensively handled the run game well. On offense, moved the ball with relative ease and passed effectively. The conservative offense won't beat Beechwood, but best to save a few bells and whistles for later on in the year. Overall a satisfying night on Springdale Road...thanks to all who participated! And good luck to all.

First trip to KCD last night. What a facility! Great fields, beautiful campus, seemed like nice folks. My middle school son remarked that the portable bathrooms "were the cleanest portable bathrooms he's every been in." Always important!

 

I thought KCD executed pretty well. I thought the QB was a little shorter than I expected but he runs a really nice boot passing game, the TE is a playmaker, RB runs hard and takes care of the ball. On defense, I thought your interior tackles and middle LB did a nice job taking away dive. The secondary is slow to react, that will come with time.

 

Eastern looked like a team coached by our old friend Justin Blanford. Really good drop linebacker play. I think their line may struggle with the 6A Louisville teams. They were playing high, but all in all a good preseason look.

 

For the Tigers: some good, some rough. Defensively, I thought they pursued to the ball very well for this point in the preseason. Secondary was a little slow to react, but I thought tackled pretty well. Nobody was shedding blockers particularly well. All in all, defensively, it just looked like we were not quite up the speed of the game.

 

Offensively, it just looked like a couple of teenagers trying to get intimate for the first time. A whole lot of pawing around and heavy breathing, but just a tangle of poor timing and missed assignments. Pass blocking was actually pretty good, but run blocking not so much. Too many running backs trying to juke and run backwards instead of getting 4 yds. A lot of confused route patterns, almost no blocking at all by wings and backs, and QB's not up to the speed of the game yet. On the bright side, there were some nice plays in the passing game when it did click, and the freshman running back Logan looks like he can be pretty good. His Tiger pedigree in football is tip-top.

 

Also, on the bright side: Tiger energy was real good, there is some cameraderie on this team, and unlike last season the sideline appears dialed into the game and one another. For a team with just 10 seniors and 4 juniors, but 55 total players, this bodes well.
