Written as an instrumental theme by Charlie Chaplain in 1936 for his move Modern Times, and recorded by Nat King Cole in 1954 with the John Turner and Geoffrey Parsons penned added lyrics, the song "Smile" is a lovely long standing standard which has also notably been covered by the likes of Diana Ross and Michael Jackson.

In recent years Janelle Monae has covered it, and though it may not be terrible exactly, I just don't dig the extra IMO unnecessary vocal gymnastics that she has applied to it to try to make it her own. Well as far as I'm concerned, she can have it, because in the case of this song I believe that less is more.

Though it seems to start off pretty OK, Shinedown's version of Lynyrd Skynyrd's - "Simple Man" loses its meaning when the over-the-top angry stoner rock sheen gets annoyingly applied to it.

Pretty much just like Shinedown's - "Simple Man", I'm not too keen on the demented growled version of "The Sound of Silence" covered by Disturbed originally beautifully done by Simon & Garfunkel

Seems again the meaning gets lost for the sake of selling out to a certain kind of angry intense sound.

Sorta like how I liked the TV version of Batman that even had a certain amount of color and humor attached to it that by the time the Dark Knight movie came around the writers felt it necessary to forget what made it good to appease to those who fiend off more on depressing dark negativity.

Can't stand Guns N' Roses ridiculous version of Paul McCartney's "Live and Let Die".

Let's be honest — any G'n'R cover, and original for that matter, stinks to high heaven. Most overrated band in history, and it's not any fault of Slash's. He was great.

I can't agree with you more all the way to Slash being great.

If, with my hatred of G'n'R, I can admit Slash's greatness, it must be so.

I totally get what you're saying.
