The Brossart Mustangs advance to Wednesday night's semi-finals with a 50-18 running clock win over Calvary Christian on Monday night at Paris High School.

 

The Mustangs went on a 13-0 run from late in the first quarter to mid-second, opening up an 18-4 early game lead and never looked back.

 

Mustang Junior Aaron Bell scored a career high 14 to lead all scorers, Bryce Donnelly added 8. Justin Wade led Calvary with 7. Mason Rusch, Akeem Riley,and Justin Wade who came into this game averaging a collective 44.9ppg were held to a total of 15 points.

 

With the win, the Mustangs set a date with the Paris Greyhounds in the Wednesday night semis at 7:30pm, which will be a reenactment of last year's championship game where the Mustangs prevailed 54-50 over the favored Hounds. Paris had defeated St. Patrick on Saturday to earn their way into the semis.

 

On a personal note, I hope this lays to rest all of the insanity about Calvary vying for the Number Three seed in the 37th District and a threat to the Mustangs here in the 10th Region "A" Tournament.

No foul trouble. Rusch did have two in the first half, finished with two. Ditto Akeem Riley. Justin Wade had one first half personal and finished with one.

 

The major difference here is bench depth and strength of schedule.

While the NKAC DivII Mustangs have been taking losses to Newport, Holmes, Highlands, Beechwood, Cincinnati Western Hills and played in two holiday classic tournaments, the DivIII Cougars have been competing with and defeating CovLatin, Heritage, Silver Grove, Beth Haven, St. Patrick and Dayton - which is exactly what they should be doing. I've said all along that even though our 6-12 record doesn't support it, and that we have taken some major hits to bigger programs, we would be somewhat dominant in Division III this year.

 

Also, we have a superior guard in Bryce Donnelly and three other very capable guards. Calvary has Rusch (a freshman) only. We can also rotate in five or six bigs/forwards. Calvary has two. Therein lies the difference between the two programs. While we are a school of 257 (9-12) we still have a "big school" basketball program, simply a year away from being right back in the mix.

Seems to be the cougars have hit a road block. Calvary bench is very weak. Seems the coach might need to adjust the offense to better fit they're scoring trio. I believe they are better then the score. Nice job by the Mustangs and there coaching staff. Good luck to both teams the rest of the way. Lastly, at some point in basketball you must learn to play man defense. Especially after a 13 to zip run.
