Yes, there really would be no other reason that I could see. Maybe he will take a few years to sort this out if it can be sorted out. I would bet family was very strong in this decision, either in his mind, or their discussions. It sounds like this is enhanced by stress.

 

Wouldn't surprise me he comes back in some capacity in the future if he wants.

 

Good for him that he is able to make this decision. My guess is he will be fine financially.
