South Oldham vs. Oldham Co 1/6/17 - District 29 showdown

Featured Replies

These two teams have combined to win 5 of the past 6 Region 8 titles and are two of the favorites to win this year....they meet for their annual District 29 seeding game on Friday, 1/6/17 at Oldham County HS in Buckner.

Approximately tipoff time is 8 pm (immediately following girls game)

Oldham has won six consecutive district titles....South has won 3 of the last 4 region titles....

Two superb coaches....South's Steve Simpson is in his 17th season in Crestwood and got his 300th win at the school last year - in the first round of the Sweet 16! South, as usual, is one of the state's most prolific three-point shooting teams, hitting over 42% of their treys - they are making over 12 a game and are on a pace that will get them near their state-record for made threes from last year. Despite shooting just over half their shots from beyond the arc, South's overall FG % is 51% (!). South is one of the few remaining undefeated teams in the state, sitting at 11-0 as of this writing. Joe Griffin has been sensational for South and is one of the early frontrunners for 8th region player of the year.

Oldham is coached by one of the top young head coaches in the state, Coy Zerhusen, who is in his fourth year in Buckner and winning about 80% of his games(!) Zerhusen has picked right up where Gary Forrest and Jason Holland left off, as the Colonels continue to be an annual contender for the region title. This year's Colonel squad features balanced scoring, but lacks the size of former Oldham teams. Still, it's hard to know who to defend on an Oldham team who had five different leading scorers in the first six games of the year. Oldham's two losses (as of this writing) were narrow losses (7 to Valley and by 3 to Waggener).... Jackson Gibson's 35 point outing against DeSales was one of the top performances of the season so far in the 8th region this season....

Both teams have defeated pre-season 8th favorite Anderson County by double figures....

Both teams sit at 1-0 in district play with wins over Trimble County....

You won't want to miss this rivalry game....but if you do, check out the video broadcast at The Pegasus Sports Network - PSN (live and archived indefinitely)

I got to see Oldham County play a couple of times last week, and I've seen South Oldham a couple of times this season. I think it's going to be a phenomenal atmosphere. But in the end, South Oldham just has too much fire power for Oldham.

Wish I could get over to see this game! Top 2 teams in the region in my opinion.
